    No airlock for three days

Hey all, I've got a hefe fermenting in my basement right now that I just went to check on for the first time in three days and it had blown the airlock off. Assuming it had been sitting open like that for the whole three days, what are the odds of it not having gotten infected?

    Festa brew kits

For those who have tried these kits, anyone else find that the wort has a bit of a sour smell to it? I've tried a few now, and they all have the same smell that I don't get with making wort from extract plus steeping grains. Wondering if I'm getting old ones that have gone bad or something, or...

hi guys, ive got three corny kegs in my keezer all hooked up to the same regulator through a three way manifold. one of the kegs is pretty much shooting out of the cobra tap while the other two pour fine. they all have the same length and i/d serving line. any idea what could be causing...

    Interesting article for brewers/foodies

Wasn't sure which forum to post this in, but I found this interesting and thought others on here might too. http://www.chron.com/news/article/Mastering-creamy-pureed-potatoes-no-fat-required-4441326.php It's a recipe for mashed (in the brewing sense) potatoes!

1.053 OG Extract Porter at 1.019 after 2 weeks - repitch?

Hi All, I've recently brewed up Northern Brewer's St. Paul Porter. Its mostly dark LME for fermentables, with about .5lb steeping grains. I used a 3 month old Wyeast Ringwood smackpack with no starter (dumb, I know). OG was 1.053 and its at 1.019 after two weeks. Was hoping for...

bottling from keg - sanitize bottles?

If you're bottling from the keg (with a beer gun, racking cane with stopper, etc.), and you'll be drinking those beers withing 3-4 days, do you need to bother sanitizing the bottles? Or will just giving em a good rinse out be enough? How long with it take for any bacteria in there to actually...

    Pitch more yeast?

Hey guys, Just made Northern Brewer's St. Paul Porter extract kit last Saturday. The OG on the kit is 1.052. Yeast was Wyeast 1187 Ringwood Ale. I took a gravity reading today (5 days after brewing) and I'm a bit concerned. The SG is at 1.022 still and I haven't seen a bubble in the...

    One regulator, different carbonation levels?

Hi all. I've finally just gotten around to getting myself a kegging setup and have brewed three beers over the last few days to be my first on tap beers. I've got a pale ale, brown ale and a hefeweizen bubbling away in primarys. My setup consists of a keezer with three cornys and a three way...

    Whiskey in my airlock

I'm gonna start cold crashing an IPA in my fridge tomorrow and don't have any vodka on hand. Would rye whiskey be ok? If I do get suckback, that small of an amount wouldnt affect the flavor of the beer would it?

    Bottle bombs?

I just bottled a batch of festa brew's double oatmeal stout. Came with safbrew s-33. I had it in the primary for 14 days and had checked the gravity three days prior and then again on bottling day and had fg of 1.023 both times. The kit said to expect fg of 1.019-1.021. As it had been stable...

Dry hopping a pilsner with centennial - bad idea?

Hey guys, I've got a Continental Pilsner made from a Festa Brew kit in my primary right now. Was considering dry hopping it with a bit of centennial. I just took a gravity sample and had a little taste and it tastes pretty much like a Czech Pilsner. I'm not so worried about keeping it...

    Swamp Cooler - need ice?

This is probably a stupid question, but will a swamp cooler do anything if you don't put ice in it? My apartment is about 72 degrees and I'd like to ferment around 67. Will putting my fermenter in a tub of water with a Tshirt wick do anything if I don't switch out ice everyday?

1.016 FG Pale Ale - Nottingham Dry

Hi Guys. I've just brewed this beer. It's been in the primary a couple weeks and has stabilized at 1.016 from an OG of 1.059. The fermentation temp was a little high due to hot temps in my apartment (around 73 degrees). Is this an abnormally high final gravity given the recipe (ie. Briess DME...

    Cold Crashing Questions

Hi Guys, I'm going to try cold crashing for the first time with the two batches I currently have fermenting. I've got a couple questions: 1. How long should I crash for? 2. I've only got space for one fermenter in my fridge, but I'd like to bottle both batches at the same time. If I...

1.050 OG Blonde Ale - How long in primary?

Hi all, I've got the Call Me! Blonde Ale from Brewing Classic Styles fermenting away in my primary right now. Can beers that are 1.050 or less get away with just a couple weeks in the primary and then bottling? I've generally been letting my beers sit for three weeks or more but they've...

Beer really cloudy after 2 weeks in the bottle

Hey guys, I recently bottled an extract recipe that I got from brewing classic styles (Programmer's Elbow ESB). It looked quite a bit cloudier than other beers I've made when I was bottling and now after two weeks in the bottle it's still really hazy. You can barely see light through a...

    Cleaning your primary with PBW

How do you go about it? Seems like a waste of chemical to fill the whole pail to soak. Any tips?

Converting pale dme to amber dme

Hi all, I recently bought 50 lbs of Briess pale dme. There's a couple recipes I'd like to try that call for amber dme. Any idea on how to make the equivalent of a pound of amber dme using pale dme and steeping grains?

Beer carbonated in the primary - final gravity question

Hi all, I just bottled a dry irish stout that I made (OG 1.050). It's been in the primary for 22 days (no secondary). I didn't take gravity readings prior to today as I assumed this should be plenty of time for the beer to have finished up fermenting (is it?). While I was bottling I drew a...

Do you need to clean your bottles if you're diligent with rinsing after opening?

I've seen a number of posts on here saying that if you always rinse your bottles right after pouring, then all you need to do is sanitize prior to refilling. Anyone disagree with this?
