Advice on how to enjoy homebrewing over the years without becoming an alcoholic.

As others have said, moderation is the key. Set guidelines that works for you, and enjoy what you have instead of thinking about what you don’t. One of my favorites is a dark mild inspired by this old BrewingTV video with John Palmer:

    What brewery are you visiting?

Traveling to Arlington, VA next weekend. Any must-go recommendations for the DC area?

Presto 23 qt. - sufficient for wort canning?

I have the presto 23qt. No problem getting to 15psig with the included weight (I live near sea level). I got the bigger size to hold more stuff beyond quart and pint mason jars. Bottles, erleneyer flasks, test tubes, tubing, etc…

    3 vessel system

I come from a place of having inherited equipment from follow brewers (late father-in-law), and know the guilt associated with not putting it to good use. It sounds like you have a good starting point to build out a brewhouse of any complexity. There are some big champions of single vessel brew...

    Pressure cooker or Instapot?

I recently went down this rabbit hole. There are a lot of variables specific to your needs and location (altitude, specifically). Strongly recommend checking out USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning for the basics: https://nchfp.uga.edu/publications/usda/GUIDE01_HomeCan_rev0715.pdf I ended up...

2 PID and 1 switch for Firing Elements

Not to hijack, but curious. We’re these standard PT100 RTD temp sensors. Did you switch all the conductors?

2 PID and 1 switch for Firing Elements

Thanks @Bobby_M i was working typing about the same thing. @handbrewing I think you’ve got this. Just plan it out and make sure you are working within the specs of the components you have (or buy new ones that meet your needs, we’ve all been there). Draw up your whole diagram and I’m sure...

2 PID and 1 switch for Firing Elements

Put some extra contact blocks on your selector switch, and you’ve got it. Switch position A Block 1: power to PID A Block 2: element fire switch to element contactor coil A Switch position B Block 1: power to PID B Block 2: element fire switch to element contactor coil B

    Growing hops in southern california

I’ve got a bit of a late bloomer here in Long Beach. This is a first year Cascade, planted mid-April. Picked one 8oz harvest 4 weeks ago, and now there is a second harvest ready to go. Fairly mild summer here, and I think it really likes living next to the compost bin.

    Multiple Concurrent Small Batch Brewing

Yeah, I’ve only seen wedges like that as strainers for cooking pasta portions or blanching veggies. Was thinking you could do something similar with steam tray pans sitting up on a false bottom. All kinds of sizes to chose from, but they are pretty much round, square or rectangle shapes. Would...

    Multiple Concurrent Small Batch Brewing

I like the idea, but, coming from the perspective of struggling to mash and boil even a single batch at a time — I think you would want to have an individual level of control for each batch that steam or a single induction burner would make difficult to provide. Considering 1 gallon batches, you...

Need some ideas for what to put above my kettles and elsewhere in my garage

Nice setup! I am going through a similar set of decisions trying to dedicate a wall of my garage to brewing. My setup is similar with the brew stand next to the overhead garage door. Since its my only way in and out, it says open quite a bit meaning a constant battle with dirt and dust (and...

Infected? Or just WY1318 London Ale III doing its thing?

Good idea to check and swap out any gaskets in your fermenter as well. The bugs love to hitch a ride on them.

Grain mill project - power drill driven

Saw somebody use a tri-clamp once, and it was too good not to steal (the idea, not the tri-clamp).

trying to achieve a cheap CO2 storage system

Agreed, but I think we put reality aside earlier in the thread in the spirit of DIY. To me this is a neat little "green" idea, and I wouldn't be brewing if I wasn't open to fulfilling some pipe dreams here and there. Even if the end product isn't CO2 good enough for beer, perhaps it could be...

trying to achieve a cheap CO2 storage system

In the article, “CO2 capture starts when O2 reaches 0.6%,” that’s 6 parts per thousand. O2 in the final product is 6 parts per billion, and the bulk CO2 they use measures 20 parts her billion. In terms of removing O2, looks like there’s still a long way to go from capture to packaging. From the...

trying to achieve a cheap CO2 storage system

Reading some articles about brewery scale co2 capture like: CO2 Recovery System Saves Brewers Money, Puts Bubbles into Beer | NASA Spinoff They do mention scrubbing, drying, and/or using desiccants to get any contaminants and moisture out of the final product which seems like a good idea...

trying to achieve a cheap CO2 storage system

Have the bag under a platform that has guides at the corners so the platform rides evenly up and down. Have the platform trigger switches at the min and max height.
