The Brew Barn - The Legend Continues!

Just a suggestion, since I found this post and had to work backwards... if you could edit your previous segments and put a link at the bottom to the next segment it would be easier to follow.

    Epoxy question

Wax paper is pretty good and easy to use. However, depending on your resin and how thick you pour it, it could generate some serious heat, which can cause some release problems, leaving stuck bits of paper. Also, if you're going to be removing your "form" than I assume you're going to be...

    Stone XI Anniversary Clone

Its possible you may have mashed too low and not long enough. Its also possible you've been fermenting at a low temp and for not long enough. Check your gravity in two days and get back to us.

    How much have you spent?

What kills me is seeing how cheap corny kegs seemed to be in the beginning of this thread.

Hops Direct just put up 2012 Crop

EDIT (Replacing short rant on Magic Hat): I just checked BA, and the most likely brew you had was Heart of Darkness, which actually gets some pretty solid reviews. Its also listed as being at 30 IBUs. BJCP IBU guidelines for the style are 25-40. That is not an over hopped stout.

Hops Direct just put up 2012 Crop

Could you provide some commercial examples of this "new style"?

    Bravo SMaSH

Dang, sorry I committed one of my own pet peeves - posting recipes to HBT and not following up. This beer did not turn out well. Brew day went without a hitch. Ferm temps were kept in check. So I don't know if the culprit was the hops, hop schedule, MO, or mash temp - maybe 154 is too high...

So yesterday was the Triumph Comp. I have to say, compared to what was said about last year's event, this year's was great. It was very well organized. They broke it down into 6 categories with 3 rounds of judging. The first round was peer-judging, where every participant rates all the beers...

Speaking of the Preston and Steve comp, Triumph just recently posted the announcement of their contest this year on FB. Looks like Preston and Steve's names are not on it. Maybe it will be organized a smidge better this year. No entry fee - but they want a sixer of your submission.

    Dry Hopping Fired it Up

OK, thanks guys! Is there anything I can do to avoid this? Like, if I just add, say, 1/2 oz at first will that knock all of the co2 out of solution?

    Dry Hopping Fired it Up

So I have a 1.086 DIPA pitched on 1/1/2012. I racked it to secondary on 1/19 and dry hopped it tonight with 1 oz. Amarillo and 1 oz. Simcoe. Minutes after dumping the hops in the beer started going crazy. The hop particles and even whole pellets were flying around in the beer like a full-on...

    Massive boil-off question(s)

I usually plan for a gallon an hour boil-off and a resulting increase of 1 point. If boil off rate is higher, you can always top off afterwards, before you pitch. It sounds like you would have been spot on with your numbers otherwise.

First Use of New (to me) ingredients (Rye and Calypso)

I did an all calypso IPA and thoroughly enjoyed it. I did get some apple and pear character, but I think that perception was driven mostly by the aroma. That was my first use of the hop and since then it's been a staple bittering hop, with great results. But be warned, as a bittering hop a...

    Moonshiners on Discovery Channel

So I just watched the finale last night. Correct me if I'm wrong, but did they just boil bananas to make their brandy? Seems to me they missed a critical step...
