Grain bag with Mash Tun manifold. Yes or No?

I fabricated a new manifold for my mash tun recently, but have yet to mash into it. Thats about 2 weeks away. After using a phils false bottom in a borrowed mash tun with and without a grain bag, I was wondering: Those of you who have manifolds in their MT,do you use a grain bag to prevent...

Making hard cider from store-bought apple juice

I got great results by going to Whole Foods and buying their organic apple juice in 1 gallon jugs (apx $7 each), pouring them into a carboy and adding champagne yeast. Turned out very nice, plus I got a few jugs to make small experimental batches of beer, mead, etc I've also bought them 1 at a...

5 Gallon mash tun build question

OK so heres the deal: I was given a 5 gallon Igloo cooler, a strainer(looks like a buffer pad) and a phils false bottom by a dude that thought he wanted to brew, but never got around to it. Oh well, my gain. Heres the deal and heres my question: The deal: The cooler is not modified...

Corny kegs in a sanke tap room

Hello all, I've ran through the forums, but haven't gotten the info I need yet. If I've missed something, point me in the right direction. Heres what I want to know: When my nano is complete, I will be servicing a few small accounts. I use corny kegs because of their ease of cleaning...

    Sake?

Time to stop fermentation. Will campden tablets (potassium metabisulphite) work with sake, or is there another preferred method? DS

    AG Old Ale

You are correct kind sir. I've modified the final grav to 1.020, which will still give a nice abv. This one was suggested by a master brewer (as well as yourself) so I will comply with democracy in action (ha) I'm thinking a target mash temp of around 152 or so, hold for an hour minimum then...

    Sake?

So the stories of plastic introducing off flavors has no merit? I'll have to brew another batch and use a bucket for it. Thanks, DS

    Sake?

OK, I know this is an older thread but I'm hoping someone wont mind sending a reply. What is the best fermentation vessel for brewing sake? I have my first batch in a 5 gallon glass carboy right now. 1st off, it was a PITA to get 3.5 pounds of cooked rice into the carboy. 2nd, it was a PITA...

    April Anne's Winter Warmer

Bottling tonight. With inefficient transfers etc, final yield was 4.2 gallons. TG was 1.011, a final ABV of 7.8%. A test beer: Prominent orange in the nose, with some honey backing it up. A slight hint of vanilla. Light clove in the taste, barely discernable ginger zing.A little alcohol...

    April Anne's Winter Warmer

I racked into secondary last night and took a reading, 1.012 on the hydrometer. That calculates out to around 7.7% ABV. Taste was very good. This will definately be a recipe to brew again (with better equipment)

    April Anne's Winter Warmer

I think it will turn out to be a nice beer. I only hit 1.070 as starting gravity, but that was due to stove and brew kettle inefficiency, IE: old gas stove, enamelware stockpot. I plan to buy a real brew kettle and propane burner for my next batch

Long term storage issues with DME/LME versus all grain

Hello, is anyone aware if there are issues related to long term storage of beers brewed with extract versus all grain? Example: Would a barleywine brewed partial mash with dme be less stable than one brewed with all grain? DS
