    Whale Pod Shipper Introduction

Welcome Jim! Been using Whale Pods for some time for shipping beers to comps. Great products and zero broken bottles!

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewed an American Lager on Saturday at my club's Big Brew Day. Used malted corn for the first time, which caused me to miss my OG by 7 points, but have to say the aroma coming out of the kettle was amazing, sort of combo of a freshly made corn tortilla and a fermenting pizza dough.

Trying to make non-dry brew / malty biere de garde with Belle Saison

Just to be clear, it's not all Saison yeasts, Belle Saison just happens to be one. And some yeasts that test positive for diastaticus don't necessarily cause an infection, they just have the gene. It's something to just keep an eye on, say you brew the Saison and then brew a Brown ale in a...

Trying to make non-dry brew / malty biere de garde with Belle Saison

A Biere de garde is usually a fairly clean beer without yeast phenolics, or very low pepper/spice notes. Would say to ferment it on the cooler side to suppress the Saison yeast esters, but since you mention ambient temps, assume you don't have temp control. One warning about that yeast...

    Hop Suppliers

For me, I buy my hops from Yakima Valley in bulk because it is cheaper in the long run. I know I am going to be using Saaz and German Noble hops a lot as I make a lot of lagers. I have freezer space so I can store them in vac sealed mylar bags to keep them fresh. Or if I need something I...

    Dunkles Bock with L17 harvest?

They just recently released it, may not even be in stores yet, I ordered directly from them. They also have WLP066 London Fog in dry form, that's been out for a while now.

    Dunkles Bock with L17 harvest?

Vienna sounds tasty too! Just one note on Harvest/Augustiner strain...White Labs has released their WLP860 Munich Lager yeast in dry form recently, which is supposedly the same Augustiner strain. I bought 5 packs of it to keep in the fridge and it may become my go to for most German malt...

    Dunkles Bock with L17 harvest?

I have a Dunkels Bock carbonating right now, second time I have made the Mean Brews recipe it's a great beer. If you are not familiar he takes a bunch of award winning recipes and comes up with a mean average recipe. For this style, out of 33 award winners, only 3% used the Augustiner...

    Which Software to pay for?

I use BeerSmith, but have dabbled with Brewfather also, just dread moving my hundreds of recipes over, so will probably stick with Beersmith.

    (another) shout out to ritebrew

Just tried myself for shipping to Mass...40 lbs of grain is $19.95 shipping, but if I change it to 50 lbs, shipping jumps to $54.13. Looks like Smcinco had 50 lbs of grain not 40 in the pics he attached. So looks like if you need more 50 lbs of grain or more, you are better off doing two...

    Kinda obsessed

Welcome! It is definitely an addictive hobby! I started off years ago brewing like 3-4 times a year, now it's 25-30 times a year and half our basement is full of kegs brewing supplies etc!

    WLP838

Supposedly it's not from a brewery, but from a German brewing science lab called Wissenschaftliche Station which was in Munich back in the '90', which is basically Weihenstephan now. There were two brewing labs back in the day, one in Berlin and the other in Munich.

    LHBS Oops

Feel like we all make that one dumb mistake every now and then, and then the beers turn out to be some of the best ones. They may not be exactly a Helles and a Bitter, but let us know how they come out.

    Fermentation is at 31 days…

The bubbles you are seeing are most likely just CO2 coming out of suspension in the mead, and said CO2 escaping via the airlock. Only real way to know what is happening is by taking a reading, and then taking another in a day or two. If they are both the same, it's done. I mean I can see...
