    Fermentation cooler

Is there a rule of thumb as to how many carboys a specific sized chest freezer will hold? E.g., 7 cu ft = 2 carboys, 15 cu ft = 4 carboys, etc.? Obviously it will vary based on the model, but is there a general rule?

Zinc washer coating is now in my beer

This. I don't think an average sized washer contains anywhere near 1-2 grams of zinc. The coating is very thin.

    Anyone Just "No Sparge"

I just do the simplest form of batch sparge. 1) Heat my water based upon my calculated pre-boil volume, grain absorption, evaporation (so I have exactly how much I need). 2) Mash in based on 1.5 qt/lb of grain. Stir. Let sit for an hour. Stir again. 3) Vorlauf once or twice, then drain to my...

Cherry Hill, NJ brewers...where are you?

I live in Mansfield, about half an hour north of Cherry Hill.

    Cider brewed 2 week ago

You can cold crash it in the refrigerator at 35 degrees for 2 days and it will be damn near crystal clear. So racking multiple times and extended secondary fermentations are not necessary for clarity. That having been said, I do think there is a benefit to an extended secondary fermentation of...

15 gallon pot - Concord vs Bayou Classic

My 15 and 20 gallon Concord pots just arrived today. Construction is very sturdy, heck they look a lot like my Blichmann. They were also packaged very well. Will be drilling them out this weekend.

Word of Warning - Avoid Glass Airlocks Like the Plague

Yeah, I snapped a plastic one in half trying to get it out of a bung the other day. Just left a good scratch on my one hand. Would have been a disaster if it was glass.

    $49 Brew Stand

After further consideration, put the Mash Tun up top. She's heating now.

    Johnson Control A419 Problem

Wow, I'm glad I read this. I have an A419 on order that will come in a few days. I was planning on using it to temp control my HLT and eventually for a HERMS build. Didn't realize the temp sensor wasn't waterproof. What sort of thermowell are people using for an HLT? The same as used in...

15 gallon pot - Concord vs Bayou Classic

The Concord seller eBay link posted earlier has the seller in CA. Shipping should be very fast to you. I'm in NJ so it'll probably take a little longer. I emailed the seller and they were willing to give me a break on shipping and an upgrade to UPS since I ordered 2 pots and one fits inside...

    Made in USA Brew Kettle?

Wow. $65 for 10 gal, $75 for 15 gal, and $85 for 20 gal. Really puts things into perspective. Lot of profit in brewkettles seeing as how a ball valve, thermometer, and assorted hardware is only about $50 retail. I have a 10 gal Blichmann and was thinking about getting a 15 or 20 gal...

    Reverse HERMS?

Not sure if that's the name or not, but I remember reading about it awhile back. Basically, the idea was to put the immersion chiller into the mash tun. Then instead of pumping wort through the IC in the HLT, you pump heated water from the HLT through the IC in the MT. This way you're not...

    $49 Brew Stand

I hear ya, but I doubt it'll be a problem. I've touched the legs of that turkey fryer with my bare hands while a turkey was frying on it - it gets hot but nothing too crazy. I don't see a lot of heat transfering from the burner to the cart, though the finish immediately under the burner will...

Anyone have any pictures of the Blichmann "Tower of Power"?

Any word on cost? I'm guessing a Top Tier + Tower of Power + 3 Boilermakers + Therminator and other accessories will easily be in the range of the Sabco and MoreBeer setups.

Anyone have any pictures of the Blichmann "Tower of Power"?

Yes, it turns the gas burner to the mash tun on and off based on mash temperature and also controls a pump to recirculate the mash (purely to prevent scorching and filter through the grainbed, since the pump is not pumping through a RIMS tube or HERMS coil). I'm still stumped on why they have a...

Anyone have any pictures of the Blichmann "Tower of Power"?

It refers to the system as a RIMS system, but wouldn't it be more accurate to call it a direct fire system? Also, why would you want a controller for the HLT? Maybe for automated fly sparging or something?

    Oxi or pbw?

This. Near as I can tell from reading their respective MSDS: Oxiclean Sodium Carbonate - 55-65% Sodium Percarbonate - 30-40% Ethoxylated Alcohol - 2-4% Sodium Carbonate is commonly known as washing soda, People add it to their laundry to make the detergent they use more effective by...
