Why is it that beersmith gives me 0 IBU for a 0min addition, but a substantial IBU for a 30 min whirlpool? This doesn't make sense to me.
If I'm putting in an addition at flame out, then waiting for temp to drop to 180 F to add my whirlpool addition, shouldn't the 0min register more IBUs than...
Since my son was born, Ive been brewing a lot less these days. After about a six month hiatus, I started brewing again. Unfortunately these last three batches since hiatus have had really poor attenuation. Im not sure how to address it.
The first batch (#1) was Jamils Amber Waves...
So I was weighing out some hop pellets for dry hopping, and I knocked the cup over and spilled them on my less-than-sterile dirty place mat. Picked them up and just about tossed them in when I thought I'd better consult 'the cloud.'
I'm considering a roggenbier using some WLP 380 yeast I have. Please chime in if you know of any commercial roggenbier examples that use a Bavarian hefeweizen yeast like this.
This is a smelly yeast, the banana gets on your face and it doesn't go away for hours. I'd like to give this...
Here's what i'm thinking about for my next endeavor. I plan to squeeze the hop bags to save as much wort/beer as possible.

Is it just me or does this year's batch of sam adams noble pils fall short of last years? I remember a huge hop aroma, that is gone. Replaced with green apples. The hops aroma just isn't there. Also i taste diacetyl, like drinking butter and apples. I'm dissappointed. Last year i bought a...
Adding German bock lager yeast to the bank! Inoculation is not as easy as it looks, the agar is slippery, and slides around when you try to poke it with the loop.
Anyway, that makes two in my collection...WLP833 and WLP802. Life is good.
I have a maibock on deck for friday and I wanted to check with the community about my starter strategy. So, here's the rundown:

A lot of stuff going on here. I just want to be sure all the ingredients will work.
Also, danstar specs say there 5 billion cells per gram. Do i really need 3.5 packages to pitch 200 billion cells?
Extra Pale Ale

I like a creamy head on my beer, and I usually use carapils to get that effect. I'd like to know if there's ever a case where carapils is redundant.
In my case I'm working a pale ale recipe with 7% crystal malt. Currently, I devote a third of that to carapils. I'd like to go a tad darker...
I used leaf hops and dry hopped the last 7 days in the secondary. Lots of the hops didn't touch the beer for a few days, so it was like it was gradually dry-hopped over the week. This is my favorite kind of beer, a simple medium-bodied pale ale.

Check this baby I got on CL today for $80! Its a U-LINE commercial freezer, I think it retails for $1000.
I removed the door shelves and replaced with a piece of sheet metal. Now I can fit two cornies and a five gallon carboy! Or, it can fit a 6.5 gallon carboy for primary fermentation...
Okay, here's a fun idea. Let's all collaborate on a recipe. The rule is you can only give one ingredient or line-item on the recipe. Should take about 5-10 posts to make a full recipe.
I'll begin with the base:
8 lbs. American Two-Row Pale
