Mashing with a Sous Vide Cooker

The mash temp range is within the same range that you use for typical sous vide cooking, so I think it should be ok (150-170F vs. 120-190F). I don't use the sous vide for the boil or anything (in fact I remove the sous vide cooker before I start the boil).

Mashing with a Sous Vide Cooker

Yeah, I realized that when I was editing the video. My sanitizing reflexes are hard to break, I just get that spray bottle of StarSan in my hand and I go crazy without thinking. :) I'm sure that this is outside the warranty, and I've been worried about carmelizing/scorching, but so far I...

Mashing with a Sous Vide Cooker

I did another recipe with the Sous Vide cooker, and made some improvements. Here's a writeup and another video.

Mashing with a Sous Vide Cooker

Thanks for checking it out. As to your questions: I did a mash out because I though it raised efficiency a little when doing BIAB. I'm somewhat new to all grain brewing so I could be wrong there. It also had the added benefit of letting me try out multiple temperature stages in the mash...

Mashing with a Sous Vide Cooker

It's definitely a little expensive, but personally I think it's worth it since you can dial in an exact temp, set a timer, and then more-or-less walk away. Plus I also use the sous vide cooker for its intended purpose of cooking food, so that also helps ease the sting of the price.

Mashing with a Sous Vide Cooker

I recently experimented with using an Anova Sous Vide Cooker to precisely control mash temperature. It made mashing much easier, and I made a little youtube video and writeup of the process here: http://sharpk60.blogspot.com/2014/12/brewing-beer-with-sous-vide-cooker.html The resulting beer...

    Custom beer bottle storage

I thought I'd show off some beer storage that I built over the holidays this year. The main features are marbles used to aid in stacking the cases one on top of another and a chalkboard surface on the side so you can write what batch is in the case. More details are available here.

    Digital Hydrometer

FuzzeWuzze: I tried out the hall effect + magnet approach too. It seems like it should work, but there are some things that are tricky about it: 1) With a strong rare earth magnet a typical hall effect sensor has a range of around 1.5 inches, which is much less than the full movement of a...

    Digital Hydrometer

Lord Ulrich: That's a good point about the limits of the sensor. I think I had 60 pounds fully on a sensor rated at 75 pounds max and it drifted within minutes. I haven't tried it with a sensor rated for a much higher maximum. Or I could try it as you suggested and put the carboy on a hinged...

    Digital Hydrometer

There was a pretty good thread on weight based measurement here. It even includes a good spreadsheet that takes into account the temperature and dissolved CO2. I was able to replicate the results with very good accuracy. The only problem I found with this approach was that if you leave the...

    Digital Hydrometer

mattd2: I tried out the differential pressure sensor idea a few years ago. It has potential but you need a VERY sensitive pressure sensor (which also makes the sensor expensive). Anyway, I posted my experimental results with an inexpensive Freescale pressure sensor here...

    Fermonitor

I'm also really interested in the Fermonitor. From the pictures on fermonitor.com, I suspect that the Fermonitor uses the hydrostatic pressure method of determining density (described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specific_gravity#Digital_density_meters). I've done some experimentation...
