    getting ready for AG...

So I've decided to take the plunge into what I hope to be the fabulous world of all grain brewing. Well, I suppose it's not quite a plunge because I'm slowly working on acquiring the necessary equipment, but more like a comfortable descent. Anyway I currently have an assemblage of parts to brew...

pitch more yeast in secondary for barleywine?

david, is there any reason I should pitch a champagne or wine yeast in stead of the 1098 british ale that I've already used?

pitch more yeast in secondary for barleywine?

so I brewed a batch of barleywine the other day, a variation of palmer's fightin' urakhai recipe (a bit more malt and about half as much hops) extract and steeped specialty grains. As for the yeast I pitched 2 packets of liquid wyeast 1098, fermentaion is vigorous. I'm just wondering if I should...

    Laying down corked barleywine.

I haven't bottled yet, but my plan is to cork using champagne corks and wires. I have a bunch of these 11.2 oz mexican soda bottles that are pretty cool and I think they'll work with the champagne corks. I am just not sure if the bottles need to be stored on their side to keep the cork hydrated...

    Laying down corked barleywine.

when putting corked bottles of barleywine down to condition/age do I need to lay them on their side like wine so the cork doesn't dry out?

    Corking and Capping method???

Thanks for the suggestion Pimp Juice. My LHBS does indeed rent out their corker.

    Corking and Capping method???

I'm preparing to bottle a barley wine. I plan on laying it down for a while and was toying with the idea of storing in champagne bottles and corks. I was turned off by this idea once I saw the price of the necessary equipment for corking champagne bottles ($150 floor model!) While looking...

    Fightin' Urak-Hai Barley Wine

Has anyone out there tried Palmer's recipe for Fightin' Urak-Hai Barley wine? I've been looking for a recipe and this one appeals to me. I'll go ahead and post it in case no one is familiar with it maybe I could atleast get some feed back. Thanks. p.s. What's a good site for ordering cheap...

    Berries in da beer.

A question for any brewer with experience using berries in his/her beer: I'm just about to make either a chocolate raspberry or cherry stout using a partial mash recipe. Now, I've looked up a couple of procedures and one of them recommends putting the berries into the hot wort after the boil...

    azucar

Is corn sugar really that hard to find, or is it just me? I've been looking for the stuff the past couple of weeks now and nobody seems to know what it is. If I don't find it tonight I was thinking about priming with maple syrup or anything else. I probably won't use cane just because that's all...

    frozen berries?

alright then I'll go ahead with the frozen berries. Do you reccomend putting them in a grain bag or adding them directly to the secondary?

    frozen berries?

I'm doing a smoked raspberry porter, but of course raspberries are out of season so I'd be using frozen. I know that freezing fresh berries prior to brewing helps them to break down during fermentation but is it bad technique to us pre-frozen berries from the grocery?

    Strain the hops?

should I strain the hops out of my wort when dumping into the primary??? (they're pellets by the way, and the brew is a pale ale)

    Aluminum Stock pot?

yeah, I suppose for an extra $75 I could save myself the heightened risk of Alzheimer's, but for now I'll be cheap with my mind as long as the beer tastes good.

    Aluminum Stock pot?

Any one see a problem with using an aluminum stock pot? It's much cheaper than steel. I have a 20 qt I got for $25.
