    I'm back!

:smack: I'm pretty sure that was it. I moved into the garage and out of the wind and BAM! Boil is going good now. Any idea how this will effect the final beer?

    I'm back!

This is weird. I'm curious what people think about this. With my old propane tank I had the boil going in about 20-30 minutes, but then it ran out. It couldn't have been out more than 10-15 minutes before I noticed it. Ran to the store, trade out for a new tank came back, fired her up. It's...

    I'm back!

Great stuff! I'm clearly rusty, I forgot to check my propane before I started and ran out right as the boil started. Damnit! Oh well.

    I'm back!

Finally getting to brew for the first time in over a year! Having a baby, starting a new career, and buying my first house really took up a lot of time. Hopefully I haven't forgotten too much. We'll see how this first batch goes.

.05 Blood Alcohol Limit for Driving?

Mandatory jail time probably helps with enforcement out there. Here in the Midwest, very unlikely you'll see a jail cell past the couple of hours to complete the booking process. You're right on procedural issues, I'm constantly fighting defense attorneys who are grabbing on to any tiny...

.05 Blood Alcohol Limit for Driving?

I'm a DWI attorney, the difference between .08 and .05 is about 1.5 beers in an hour, on average. As noted earlier, the real issue isn't blood alcohol level, it's enforcement. Being "tough" on DWI is great for the politicians to talk about, but in general, the law is not "brought down" on...

Just got mine finished. Very simple, but it gets the job done.

    Freezer to Keezer help needed

I believe we have the same freezer. That is the set screw that you found. In my experience you'll have to turn it several full turns to get into the right temp range. I'll give you one word of warning, when I adjusted my freezer that way it worked great for a few months, but then it froze...

    From Kansas? Midwest?

I'm in Topeka as well, but I'll be moving to KC in a month or two.

    Holy $#!@!

I'm married, and I'm happy, don't get me wrong. It's just freaking me out a bit right now for some reason. I graduate school in December, and the baby isn't due until April, so hopefully I have a job and everything is good by then.

    Holy $#!@!

I'm going to be a dad! This is good news, but I've had a few, and I'm freaking out a bit. It feels safe to say that here, where no one I know will read it, or know who I am. Anybody else freak out a little before their first kid was born?

    Tragedy!!!

It sucks, but what can you do? It was surprisingly easy to clean up with a shop vac. Sadly, it puts a major dent in my pipeline. That's what I get for deciding I had a good pipeline going and easing back a bit. My warning to all, beware picnic taps! They're the devil!

    Tragedy!!!

I opened up my chest freezer tonight to pull a nice draft of my IPA why I watch some football, and what do I find? Near 5 gallons of Yooper's Dead Guy Clone in the bottom of the freezer and the keg floating! All that delicious beer gone! :( Time to convince SWMBO I need to drop the picnic...

    Fermentation Problem

The fermentation started quickly enough. But it never appeared to be a very vigorous fermentation. The krausen wasn't very thick and it disappeared within a few days. But if I stand over the carboy I see a bunch of bubbles on the surface and fairly regular popping of the bubbles.

    Fermentation Problem

The only thing different I did with these two batches is it was the first time I placed them in a cooler with about 3 or 4 inches of water and wrapped a couple of wet t-shirts around the carboy and rotated frozen water bottles to keep the temp down. We've had record highs this summer, it's been...

    Fermentation Problem

I'm starting to get frustrated. I've been brewing for 3 years, and I haven't run into too many problems that didn't work themselves out eventually if left alone. However, I have two beers now that seem to be either stuck or just fermenting at a snails pace. The first is an IPA that's been...

Fermentation Question - aka What is going on?

I brewed Yooper's Dogfish Head 60 min clone on 6/19. I measured the SG at 1.075. I pitched a starter of Pacman yeast and fermentation took off as expected. I used a cooler and wet t-shirts to keep the temp at around 65 degrees. On 7/2, I took a SG reading and got 1.028, which seemed high to...

    chest freezer

There's a sticky thread over in the Bottling/Kegging section that covers sizing of chest freezers in a lot of detail with a bunch of pictures of different setups. You should be good with a freezer that size.

    brewing for my wedding

I didn't give my guests a BMC choice, although I had a good variety among the beer I provided. I didn't have a single complaint, or hear about anybody wishing there was BMC. Now, I did offer some mixed drinks as well, so it's possible people that wanted BMC just had a mixed drink instead.
