    Second rule of HBT... Distilling

There is a wealth of information on the internet on how to. However, it'd be nice if it were a legal practice that you could do and share with friends and family without looking over your shoulder. 1. Distilling alcohol at home for fuel is already legal on the hobby scale. 2. Homebrew in the...

    Second rule of HBT... Distilling

The smiley face makes me think you are joking... but many still believe this! There is more Methanol (the stuff that makes you blind) in a serving of homebrewed wine than a serving of brandy that same wine could be distilled into. Myths like that make people think that distilling is dangerous...

    Second rule of HBT... Distilling

Wouldn't it be great if we could actually discuss distilling? Here is a white house petition for legalization. It's not mine just passing the message. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/legalize-homemade-brandy/GBVX2HkW I've already signed. Please sign so Distilling is no longer a...

    corn syrup wine.

Since we have brought up distilling, here is a white house petition for legalization. It's not mine just passing the message. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/legalize-homemade-brandy/GBVX2HkW I've already signed. Please sign so Distilling is no longer a taboo topic on HBT!

    Workhorse (M10)

I made an IPA (OG 1.066) with Mangrove Jack M10 Workhorse yeast on 12/18/13. Wondering if anyone else is having similar experiences with this yeast? I dry pitched, no starter, at 64° and it was cranking good for a week or so before it stalled out @1.022. I brought the temp up to around 74°F...

    Black Friday at Nikobrew

Ordered nearly 8lb of Hops! Great deal and the flat shipping got me to try a few new varieties too. Thanks! Now to clear out space in the freezer without SWMBO noticing.

    Coffee: when to add it??

I spoke the the brewer of the Santa Fe Brewing Co. and they have an amazing Imperial Java Stout. He says they push the cold beer through the grounds like a hopback on the way to the bright tank. I'm not sure the best way to adapt that to a homebrew situation but the beer was fantastic.

Anyone haerd of these new Yeasts from Mangrove Jack's (New Zealand)

Ya, I think I'll use Newcastle dark with a milk stout next. Something that will benefit from the low attenuation.

Anyone haerd of these new Yeasts from Mangrove Jack's (New Zealand)

Beer is done! I fermented at 68°F subtle english esters but nothing prominent, good mouthfeel, OG was 1.053 finished at 1.016 for 68.7% attenuation. I did a simple cider with the leftover yeast. I was hoping it would come up short on that one to but no luck. It blew through 1.060 to 0.099 in...

Making Traditional rice Wine. Cheap, Fun, and Different

Ok, I know this has probably been addressed in the last 2610 posts but... Has anyone tried to seed a new batch of rice with the mush from the previous batch (like pitching on a yeast cake). I recently moved and no longer have a yeast ball dealer! I'm down to my last two balls!

Anyone haerd of these new Yeasts from Mangrove Jack's (New Zealand)

Just brewed a Scottish 90/- (ish) on Friday. Pitched a pack of rehydrated Newcastle Dark yeast. Fermentation at 68* and within 12 hours blowoff tube was needed. Violent ferment for 24 hours and by today (Sunday) the airlock is all quiet again. I'll try to remember to post again with OG/FG and...

    Hoppy basketballers

I caught a glance at Sports Center the other day mentioning Nuggets and Warriors. Wow! I didn't realize they named sports teams after hops! I want to try Timberwolf hops, sounds piney.

$400 invested and three problem riddled batches to show for it

I used to cool the wort in the bathtub. After changing the cold tap water when it started getting warm a few times. I'd ice bath it and could get down to pitching temps in an hour or so. Also, Once you start including ingredients $400 will go pretty quick!

My tap water is 80f, how to chill wort lower?

I just remembered seeing this guy online... Never used one but looks ideal for your situation. Essentially what others have described. http://www.rebelbrewer.com/shoppingcart/products/The-Chinchilla-%252d-Wort-Pre%252dchiller.html

    Hooked on double brew days

I'm going about it the hard way, Last friday I did two all-grain BIAB brews. Due to my small kitchen and lack of supplies I mash, boil, and chill in my 5 gallon kettle so I have to have batch one in the fermentor before I start heating mash water for batch two. I did 2X 3 gallon batches and...

Do I Bottle and which one?

Love how quick these responses come in! Sounds like I'm going big! Making a Belgian Wit with Lavender for SWMBO pitched over the golden cake (WLP400) and an American Brown ale that I want to have a significant special-B contribution pitched on the IPA Cake (US-05). Anyone have tips on Lavender...

Do I Bottle and which one?

I really want to brew tomorrow but both fermentors are full... I have a 3 week old Falconers Flight IPA (OG was 1.056 FG is now 1.010) in one. The other contains a 5 week belgian golden strong (1.067 to 1.004). They both have hit (and passed) the estimated FG, with no gravity change for over a...

    Gravity keeps dropping

Honey and LME went in for the last 15 minutes of boil. I like the oaking idea, perhaps I'll have to rack some off into a gallon jug with oak. I went with a long and low mash just to get good conversion on the 2 lb of oats, guess it worked! Thanks!

    Gravity keeps dropping

I'm down to 1.004 after 3 weeks, still bubbling slowly! Recipe: (5.5 gal) 5 lb belgian pale malt 2 lb flaked oats 2 lb honey 1 lb wheat malt 3.3 lb LME I mashed 90 minutes at 147-149 (stovetop BIAB) 1 oz magnum for a 90 minute boil and pitched on a cake of WLP 400 belgian wit. My OG...
