When will I know if I messed up my first brew?

Dude your fine don't worry about it. I don't even boil my top-off water. I think there is a misconeption about having to brew in a level VIII clean room. Its just beer.

How Much Money Is There To Be Saved?

You can definetely save money. Wash your yeast, but hops in bulk and buy LME / grain from you LHBS and you can brew extract kits for 20 bucks. You would be saving over 50% over bud light. If you compare this to say Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (8 bucks a 6-pack is the price here) you would be...

This OktoberFAST ale didn't happen to be extract did it? Could you possibly list your recipe?

Does my washed yeast at least look right?

You want to let the trub settle in the carboy, then decant into a jar. Let it settle in the jar, then decant into smaller mason jars. You are step decanting to try to get all the trub out. However, your jars look ok. You may have a little trub in there, but that will settle out in your...

    Root Beer Yeast

Right on thanks. FYI in the recipe section look under the ginger ale recipe by yooper for naturally carbing. The other recipes are for force carbing (kegging)

    Root Beer Yeast

I am wondering if anybody knows the yeast / ingredients to brew root beer. I am guessing it is different yeast as no alcohol is produced but I have no idea what to get. BTW if anyone has a fully ingredient list / procedure list (including ferment time, secondary if necessary, bottling...

    northern brewers chinook ipa flavor

Jlsbrew I kinda feel the same way regarding the malt profile and mouthfeel. I think the idea with this one is its an easy drinking IPA. If you brewed again would you add maybe 1/2 # crystal 20 to the steeping grains to get a little more malt flavor and mouth feel?

    northern brewers chinook ipa flavor

I just brewed this again, but switched out the flavor/aroma/dry hop w/ CITRA. Hope it turns out good.

    northern brewers chinook ipa flavor

bringing this up out of the graves, I have got to say that this beer really came around for me. I noticed that first month there was somewhat a 'grassy' flavor. After that, the aroma of grapefruit really came through and the harsh grassy/piney flavor died. Now I have just 2 left (approx 2...

    Why LME not DME

Very good point. I always have some DME on hand for a starter

    Why LME not DME

LME is cheaper. If both are fresh they are the same. LME wins

    IIPA bottling Q

Have an IIPA which has been in the secondary for 2 months. I washed the yeast from this batch. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to decant one of the jars of washed yeast, and add the yeast along w/ priming sugar to bottling bucket and racking on top. I want to make sure it carbs...

If you could ask a brew masters a question....

I would ask how they adjust batch to batch for exact same taste. I mean homebrewing you can brew a batch w/ exactly the same ingredients and same procedure and come up w/ slighty different colored or flavored beer. In my opinion the biggest claim to fame for the big brewers is the ability...

    All Citra IPA

Anybody who has brewed w/ citra, why is it bad to use for a bittering? weird flavors? It seems that it would be a good bittering hop w/ that high of an AA%. I have a bunch of citra, amirillo, cascade, columbus and centennial and I was going to run a series of individually hopped ipa's. I made...

Do you let IPA's breathe before drinking??

"risk investing in a six-pack" It does sound like a risky investment. What was your personal rate of return on that investment?

    All Citra IPA

Theres a Citra Hopped Amber in the recipe section that looks good. Perhaps switch the malt bill to suit an APA and your gold. BTW your looking at a IIPA with that much LME. I would use 6 lbs + the 1 lbs 20L, drop the citra down to 3 oz. 1 oz @ 60 .5 oz @15 .5 oz @ 0 1 oz dryhop...

    Starter Help for Noob!!

I don't think the OP was trying to pitch an propagator, although I am not sure. Most kits that have a smack pack come w/ the activator. Wyeast claims The Activator™ is designed to inoculate five gallons of wort (up to 1.060 SG) providing the pitching rate recommended by professional...
