    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

I have made 6 batches of this mead over the past 4 years. Last night I found a gallon jug pushed to the back of a shelf in my basement which started on 10-14-09 and racked into the jug on 12-25-09. It is by far the best tasting. Definitely worth the wait, even if the wait was accidental!

Man I sure do hate the police...

I have been pulled over twice in the past six months by our local police (two different officers) while riding my bike. I commute to and from work most days by bicycle on roads with fairly heavy traffic. Both officers told me to get on the side walk and out of the street. One of them actually...

Maris Otter VS. UK Pale Ale Malt

Thanks for your response. I have been using MO because my LBHS had it in bulk. I have been using it in all the recipes I have brewed in place of 2 row malt or British pale ale malt. I LOVE the way my beers have been tasting. I was just curious on how much differently they might taste if I had...

Maris Otter VS. UK Pale Ale Malt

I am a fairly new home brewer and I am wondering what effect substituting Maris Otter will have on a recipe that calls for British pale ale malt? What will be different about the resulting beer?

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I plan to brew either a batch of my Hillbilly ordinary bitter or another batch of my London porter this weekend. I haven't decided which yet. I may brew both if I have the time.

    Other hobbies besides brewing?

Fly fishing, fly tying, running, cycling, and playing classical guitar are my other obsessions. The time spent on each tends to go in cycles. I tend to fish more heavily in spring and early summer but then spend more time running and on the bicycle late summer, fall and winter.

Marking your brewpot for volume! How do you do it?

I did the same thing. I have a mark every 1/2 gallon from 1 to 8 gallons.

    Beer Alchemy tun t/m?

I use Beer Alchemy and a 5 gallon rubber maid cooler. I set the value to 0 because I preheat the mash tun with a gallon of boiling water for about 10 minutes. When my mash water gets to the strike temp. and I am ready to proceed I simply dump out the preheat water. My mash temps have been...

I also live in Lexington. I ordered 4 lbs about a month ago. The shipping was $12.59 and it took about a week. Still a great deal!

    Water to Mash Ratio

I just started brewing all grain in August, after reading Palmer's book, so I started with 2 qts/lb. Yesterday, was only my 5th all grain batch, but I again had an efficiency of 80%. I had been calculating my grain bill based on a target of 75% and every batch so far I have over shot my OG by...
