    Estranged wife and taxes

Figured I would come to my best source of advice to toss out this question/scenario. After 6 years of marriage and two kids, my "soon-to-be" ex-wife decided she wanted to be free and feel independent. Long story short, she cheated on me and moved out of the family home. Both kids stay with...

    Water Report Questions

I just got my water report back from Ward Labs. I've run the numbers through the EZ Water Calculator and Bru'n Water and compared my results with Palmer's recommended ranges. Essentially, it looks like everything is pretty low. I already use campden tablets to remove chlorine, but I am...

Do I Need a Grain Mill

I've been AG brewing for about two years now, but I have always depended on the LHBS to mill for me. I've got my new system in place and am happily operating again after a 6 month hiatus. Before Christmas, my mother asked me if there was anything I needed for my brewery, and I honestly...

    Mr Beer Gift Card

My dad got me a gift card to Mr Beer for Christmas. As an all grain brewer and kegger, I can't seem to find anything worth buying on their site. Any suggestions?

    Blichmann Burner Flame Escaping

I posted a brief note about this when reviewing my Tower of Power, but I figured I'd come looking for answers with a specific post. While testing my system today, the flame from the burner jumped into the area right behind the air damper. It happened twice, once upon ignition and once when...

Tower of Power - Initial Thoughts

Received my Blichmann Tower of Power (1 module for MLT) and stand with pump yesterday. Assembly was a piece of cake. Kudos to Blichmann for including everything needed in the box. I'll go ahead and include a couple of thoughts regarding the first water test I did with it. I'll also preface...

    Conical - Yeast Dump Clogged

I went to do a small yeast dump out of my Blichmann 7 gal (NPT fittings) from last weekends brew and I get nothing. Apparently she is clogged. I can draw from the racking port, but the sample was quite yeasty. Any ideas for dumping the yeast on this batch or am I better off just leaving it on...

    Storage Temp for March Pump

I've got my 815 mounted to my brew rig that sits outside. With winter fast approaching, would I be best served to remove the pump and store it inside. It doesn't get too cold here in MD, but I know many electrical components don't respond well to low temps. BTW, it's covered so rain/snow isn't...

    Back in the saddle

Off the Wagon Brewing is back in action after a brief hiatus, a cross-country move, and refitting of the entire system. Brewed my first batch since April this evening - 5 gal of pale ale. The new, all Blichmann setup was AMAZING. Not only was the brewing process super easy (and leak free!!!)...

    Six-Tap Keezer in Anchorage

Hey everyone, It's come time for me to evacuate Alaska and move back to the lower-48. I know this will only apply to a few people up here in the soon-to-be-frozen-tundra, but I'm selling my keezer. Here's the link to the original build, but it looks like SWMBO cleaned out our Dropbox...

    Yeasty SMaSH

Brewed a SMaSH a few weeks ago and she's pretty yeasty. Aroma is of baking bread. Mouth feel is pretty heavy, even though it attenuated out to 1.014 (76% apparent) and it has a strong yeasty flavor. I didn't expect this because Notty usually behaves so well. Primary 1 week @ 66F, secondary 2...

    New Keezer Project

First, thanks to Jester et al for the inspiration, motivation, and design. I thought keezer v1.0 (soon to be keezer jr.) was dying. Apparently sticking 4 cornies full of 70F beer will wreck havoc on a 15 year old freezer... Long story short, he's still alive and his big brother is in...

    Fat Tire Clone - Mmmmm...

Well, it's been about two years since I've enjoyed my beloved Fat Tire. I'm a New Belgian phreak and she is my favorite. No distributors here in Alaska though :( So, I decided to brew up my own. Just tapped it today and I'm very impressed. Maybe it's just been so long and my wish for it...

    Another Keg/Carboy Cleaner

    I threw together a keg and carboy cleaner this morning and figured I would share. Parts: 1 x Smartpond 300-500gph Fountain Pump (Lowes) 2 x 5 gallon paint buckets (Lowes) 18" Loc-line (McMaster) 1 x Loc-line 1/2 male connector (McMaster) 1 x Loc-line Nozzle (McMaster) ((Note: PVC/Copper...

    Tax Season Brewery Upgrade

Tax season was good to me and I got the go ahead from SWMBO, so I made a few upgrades to the brewery. I am still waiting on some parts for the eHLT, plate chiller, and new brass heads for the pumps (cross threaded them after the first cleaning...) but other than that I think I am good to go. I...

    Slow Pils Start

So, I decided to try my first Pils the other day. Pretty simple recipe: -9 lbs Pilsner malt -3 oz Saaz (split into 4 additions) -2 oz Hallertaurer (4 additions) -WLP800 with starter made 3 days in advance I did decoctions to step temps up (132F 30 min, 150F 60 min, 170F) and fly...

    Hi from AK

Hey all, I'm not exactly a noob, I've been lurking for almost two years now, building up my system. I started brewing August 14, 2009 and there began my obsession. In the past year and a half I have built a four tap keezer, six vessel fermentation chamber (ales only), and single tier brew...

Chumps for Work Mates (read: free beer in Anchorage)

Supporting Evidence: - I've been brewing for about 3.5 months and have about 12 batches under my belt. My beer tastes better than most anything from the corner shop. - SWMBO let me build a 4-tap keezer for Christmas in August (it's real in my house). - I ALWAYS have four beers on tap and...

    AK Fermentation Chamber

It's getting cold up here in Alaska. The temps in my garage have started to plummet (about 5 degrees F outside = 55-60 in the garage), so I decided to build a home for my brews. Four to six buckets/carboys hanging around the house was too much for SWMBO, and it gives me a reason to build...

    New MLT Manifold

So, it's Sunday and I needed something to do after watching my Broncos blow it. Decided to build a new manifold for my Cooler MLT. The old one was copper pipe soldered together and connected to the bulkhead with a SS braid. The new one is CPVC all the way to the bulkhead and is quite a bit...
