Slightly Smashed Apollo Pale Ale - Input?

based on your hop schedule you arent going to get much flavour out of these hops. if u want flavour you need to add something between 20-10 min. if you wanna get flavour i would recommend maybe .75 oz of apollo at 60 min. less upfront bitterness. then maybe a 20 min addition of 1 oz. then a 5...

Slightly Smashed Apollo Pale Ale - Input?

Actually, instead of a Pale Ale I made an Apollo IPA with about 1/2 pound of Apollo hops. I don't have the recipe on hand but what I recall was the bittering was nice, not harsh. Flavouring was apples and pears and slight citrus from what I remember, and a bit too resiny as the Crystal 60L was...

re-circulating cooled wort into hot kettle?

yeah i have a ball valve at one end of the pump to control the flow. still it takes 30+ minutes to cool 10 gallons. i think i will try it again with regular hot water and see the results. and if that doesnt suffice i can do an ice bath at the output.

Slightly Smashed Apollo Pale Ale - Input?

thanks for the input. i have a pound in total so i have lots i can use. however, i wanted to keep the IBU under 50 for a pale ale. and with these super high alpha hops its hard to do so. i agree that maybe more late hop additions will give me a better understanding of the flavour. maybe...

Slightly Smashed Apollo Pale Ale - Input?

Looking for some input on this recipe. I haven't brewed with apollo yet and want to make a smash (well slightly smashed) for experimentation. I want a pale ale that has a bit more characteristics of an IPA. OG 1.056 FG 1.015 IBU ~ 46 efficiency 70% Safale US-05 11.75# 2-row 1#...

re-circulating cooled wort into hot kettle?

yeah sorry i meant 25C. although my mind works in metric my hands sometimes think in imperial. ideally i want to cool wort within 10-15 min down to 20C (i've been able to do this before with a plate CFC) but currently it is taking 30+ minutes to cool down to 25-30C (which is roughly the same...

re-circulating cooled wort into hot kettle?

i built a CFC using 1/4" OD pipe and 30' length and a 5/8" hose. i was able to test it out and it brought the wort down to 25 F but extremely slow. took roughly 30 minutes to for 10 gallon batch. i dont want to be waiting around for a long time to transfer the wort into the buckets so i...

What to do after yeast washing?

That's what I suspected, I am a bit confused on how much yeast I should make a starter from. What would be considered a big enough starter?

What to do after yeast washing?

I recently made a 10 gallon batch of blue moon clone using wyeast forbidden fruit and washed the yeast and it is currently being stored in mason jars. I want to make another 10 gallon batch this summer of the same beer and was wondering the following: Most videos show people making a...

    Wyeast + yeast starter?

Whenever I use liquid yeast I always use the WYeast brand and smack the pack 24 hours prior to brewing/pitching. I've read on the manufacturers website that the purpose of activating the yeast 24 hours in advance it to ensure a healthy yeast. I'm wondering if it makes sense to additionally make...

My entire basement smells like ...

Just did a 10 gallon batch of ginger peach wheat and used wyeast 3068. Managed to hit an O.G. of 1.048 exactly. After two days of fermentation my entire basement smells of fermentation (slight egg smell), which is weird because I have a 1200 sq foot basement and my fermentation room is...

Mash Tun Cooler Outdoors in the cold?

I have a coleman extreme 72 qt cooler and want to start doing my mashes outside. Although spring is technically here the weather here in Canada hasn't reached the double digits yet (Celsius). The weather outside when I brew is between 2-6 degC. I'm a bit worried about heat loss. I was going...
