chill haze has improved my beer

I used WLP400. I believe thats supposed to be Hoegaarden yeast. It is also a low floctuating yeast so I would have expected it to stay in suspension and cloud up the beer

chill haze has improved my beer

Hi all. I brewed a Hoegaarden clone and all seemed to go well. I was slightly under on the estimated OG, but I put this down to me not cooking the flaked oats and flaked wheat in the recipe before I placed them in the mash with the pale malt and malted wheat. I mashed at 154F for 90 mins...

First time mash tun build - opinions on insulation please

The only roof flashing I can find is like this: http://crafts.benfranklin.com/12949-3ALUM-ROOF-FLASHING-BASE-SIZE11/M/B0010450EG.htm Don't think this will be much good due to the large hole in the middle. Is the flashing you are talking about basically a thin sheet of aluminium? If so I...

First time mash tun build - opinions on insulation please

There are other products on their website that state the max temp is 105C. I think they do several versions of the product that can withstand different ranges of temperature. I sent an email to them last night but haven't received a reply yet. I ask them something along the lines of "what...

First time mash tun build - opinions on insulation please

Your mash tun looks cool. I don't have the tools to be cutting aluminium sheet unfortunately :( I was hoping to find some kind of material that required minimal tools to attach and that was flame resistant and waterproof. Looks like I'll have to rethink the armaflex...

First time mash tun build - opinions on insulation please

It does say max surface temp 60C but it also says it self-extinguishes so I thought it would be alright. Now I'm not so sure... I thought armaflex was the material people used when insulating a direct fire mash tun? Are there better materials to use for this purpose?

First time mash tun build - opinions on insulation please

Fantastic! Looks like it is waterproof as well which will make cleaning the mash tun much easier. I'm looking for a material that I can attach permanently that also looks pretty cool. Think this may tick all the boxes.

First time mash tun build - opinions on insulation please

Hi all. I am about to start work on my mash tun. I want to be able to direct fire the mash tun so as I can easily perform step mashes. I also want good insulation to prevent heat loss. My idea is to insulate the sides and the top of the mash tun but to leave the bottom uninsulated so as it...

Mash Water Chemistry Calculator - Feedback Wanted

Just come across this thread. I know its a little old. Has anyone got this to run in Vista using Office 2007? I have the solver add-in installed but when I click on the "click hear to find water adjustments" button I get Complile error: cannot find project or library. Any ideas how to...

    massive amount of trub

I will be racking to secondary to clear. My main concern is that i'll loose moor beer than planned and have a greater amount of headspace in the secondary. Wasn't sure why so much trub was produced. The thing is it didn't settle to the bottle of the kettle when I cooled the wort after boiling...

    massive amount of trub

Hi all. So I brewed a witbier today using flaked wheat, flaked oats, malted wheat, pale malt and flaked oats. I used the DeathBrewer stove top all grain method to create a 12.5 L batch. So basically brewing in a bag and batch sparging. After racking to primary I have noticed that there is a...

WLP400 starter - will low floctuation cause problems?s

Great. I have used the method described in the post you suggested before. It works well. I have only used it for high floc strains though. Wasn't sure whether for low floc strains you would get the same behaviour as it is supposed to stay in suspension longer. Will definitely give it a try...

WLP400 starter - will low floctuation cause problems?s

My main concern is that if I decant spent wort from the starter I will loose a good portion of yeast, as the strain has low floctuation. Is this so? In your fridge you say that you've got some wlp400 starters. Is the liquid very clear, with a noticable layer of yeast sediment on the bottom...

WLP400 starter - will low floctuation cause problems?s

Hi all. I am about to brew my first wit, using a vial of wlp400. I want to make a 2L starter so that I can get 2 batches out of one vial. My usual method for starters is to let the fermentation go, and after its finished shove the starter in the fridge so as the yeast drops to the bottom...

Thinking of jumping into the wild - help please

Think I'm gonna go for it then. Will use the White Labs Sour Mix as I can easily get hold of that here in the UK. WYeast less easily. After reading through your comments I think I'll pitch this at the start in the primary and let it go for a year. Is it OK to add cherries to the primary or...

Thinking of jumping into the wild - help please

Thanks for the info guys this is great stuff. ryane - you say that a pellicle forms in reponse to headspace. For lambics is it therefore best to not use an airlock and have the beer exposed to the air? Or should I use an airlock as i would for a standard beer

Thinking of jumping into the wild - help please

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm beginning to understand the process now. It is said in a few posts that the beer should be left on the cherries for about three months then taste and take hydrometer readings. My worry is how do I know that all the sugars from the cherries have been...

Thinking of jumping into the wild - help please

WLP655 does contain saccharomyces. Does that mean that I should pitch only the WLP655? If so when should I add cherries to the primary? Beerific - you say keg when it taste right. Is it dangerous to bottle condition such a beer in case of bottle bombs? Have any of you guys ever used WLP655 or...

Thinking of jumping into the wild - help please

Hi all. Have never brewed a lambic before and am halfway through wild brews. Would like some help and opinions to see if I have the process correct in my head. Does this sound ok for a lambic kriek? 1. I was thinking of creating a wort with 60% 2row, 40% wheat 2. Pitch WLP655 - Belgian...
