    Efficiency Issues - UPDATED

How long did you sparge for? On my three vessel system we aim to sparge a 5 gallon batch slowly over 40 minutes or so. For my single vessel system, I just bump up the grain bill a bit… Do you use recipe software? If not, I recommend it. Figure out your efficiency and plug that into your profile...

    Spike Solo Owner's Thread

But I bet it will! My buddy and I made a completely experimental holiday warmer with Kveik yeast and juniper berries but then left it to sit in a second use 5 gallon bourbon barrel for two weeks. Well fast forward 52 weeks later and we thought we better finally get it out of the barrel. We...

    Spike Solo Owner's Thread

Hi Biggz1313. I am using the 20 G Solo equipment profile. I am at a whopping 125' elevation! Once boiling I reduce the power to 70% per Spike's recommendation. I do not have a steam condenser lid. For the 5 gallon batch brew I just finished today, I added 8 gallons to the kettle, boiled for 60...

    Spike Solo Owner's Thread

Interesting! I have not had the stuck mash issues others have had (yet!) but am brewing an oatmeal stout tomorrow so will report back. I have not made the switch to a direct mount pump yet but I think I will at a minimum I will set up a three way valve so I can recirculate and whirlpool prior to...

    What the…?!?!

Once a year I make a saison that I transfer onto peaches and brett to age for ~9 months. I always transfer to tertiary for a final settling and it always does something like that as it clears. Always tastes delicious. So might the two be unrelated? I will try to find a photo of mine doing that….

    Spike Solo Owner's Thread

Hi all. To reduce waste, especially when brewing 5 gallon batches on my 20 G Solo, I was toying with attaching the pump directly to the kettle outlet. Has anyone else tried this? It would mean deleting the kettle outlet valve but I figure I can rely on the pump valve instead? Would appreciate...

Particulates in wort - To keep or not to keep?

Ooh, you rebel! I have never tried no-chill. I guess I better add it to the experiment list! Glad the starter technique works for you, I am definitely going to give that a try.

Setting up a pump on a mash tun

Set up below everything it is very easy to prime and usually stays primed for the whole brew. We initially had it placed higher up and it was definitely giving us problems!

Setting up a pump on a mash tun

Much like @OakIslandBrewery I use a gravity fed 1 gallon plastic bucket with a sieve in it as a grant that I connect the pump to so I won’t pull directly on the grain bed. You have to be mindful of the level of wort so it doesn’t overflow or run dry. Some day I will figure out how to control...

Particulates in wort - To keep or not to keep?

So there are 3 Brulosophy episodes on this topic stretching back to 2014 or so. The first two conclude that more trub made for a clearer and crisper beer, but the most recent one, based on a single taster rather than a group, preferred the flavor of the non-trub beer, though it was moderately...

Particulates in wort - To keep or not to keep?

Well, I wasn’t very clear either! Main question regards finished wort. Just thinking letting it sit overnight would mean I could use some of the actual runnings from the beer to make a 24 hour starter so I would be pitching the same beer i to it rather than DME. But whenever I let it sit...

Particulates in wort - To keep or not to keep?

Occasionally I will let my freshly brewed wort sit overnight in a sealed and sanitized bucket before pitching (getting down to lager temperature, waiting for yeast starter, etc.). A bunch of stuff settles to the bottom overnight. Do I want to transfer that into the fermenter or not when I aerate...

Second Fermentation - is it necessary?

OK, I am going to be one of those people: It depends. On the yeast primarily but also the style. A hazy dry hopped NEIPA? No, I agree with all the other posts. You want that as fresh as can be. But a saison or other Belgian yeasted beer? I say most definitely transfer to a second vessel to get...

    Spike Solo Owner's Thread

Hi all, new to this thread and Homebrewtalk generally. Some quick background for reference. I have been homebrewing for five years, only getting more and more avid, with 62 brews completed. I share a 15 gallon system I built over the years with a friend, but have been using a Brewzilla for the...
