    DME vs Corn Sugar

Ok I just finished up. I boiled about 3 and 1/2 gallons and let cool. Just to be safe. Then did a stove top boil of 1.5 gal and added the LME and 2.2 lbs of LDME with no boil over and good dissolve. Added hot wort to fermenter and added the cold water for 5 gallons perfectly. I am looking...

    DME vs Corn Sugar

Just about to brew up a Muntons Yorkshire Bitter can this afternoon. The recipe calls for 2.2 lbs of Corn Sugar which I have but I also have a bag of Light DME which I would like to try. My last bitter came out a little too cidery but drinkable so I am curious if the LDME would be a better...

    Help with first batch critique

Ok so it's now been a month and a half since my first foray into home brewing and I have started drinking my first batch and would like a little critique to help me with some inconsistencies I am finding with my first batch. I started with an Irish Red Ale kit from MoreBeer.com. Recipe...

    Recommendations for Good Online Suppliers?

Just cracked my first brew on Sunday! I got the Irish Red Ale kit from MoreBeer.com and man I was pleased. Very solid tasting beer. I had a Sam Adams Irish Red in the fridge so I blind tasted it and they were close and mine is still kind of young. So yeah I recommend MoreBeer very much.

    Do you secondary?

I just bought a 5 gallon BB secondary for my X-mass present. I just use 2 primaries now so we'll see how I feel about it later. If anything it will be a way for me to open up a primary faster without having to bottle right away.

You Wanna Read Some Serious Anti-Beer Propaganda?

All one has to do is read a bunch of other posts on that site to see how far gone they are. Their "science" is awful and their arguments are weak at best. Religious extremists of any kind always exhibit the same level of self inflicted ignorance and they just tailor real science to fit...

What should this recipes SG be?

My Irish Red started out at 1.051 and ended up 1.016. Thats pretty normal but some Reds are in the 1.040's.

Spaced on adding fluid to my air lock

Getting some sanitizer like Star San in your beer isn't bad at all. I shouldn't hurt a thing. In fact Star Sans becomes food for yeast so it helps. The benefit of fermenting is that CO2 is denser than O2 and this is why open fermentation is possible. Because of this not putting water in the...

Racking Second Batch, Final Gravity Reading

After a quick read it seems that carbing would lower your gravity reading but you could de-carb the beer ahead of time and warm it close to 60 degrees to get the best reading. The carbing will still probably affect the reading but you could get close. You are going to waste a beer though. You...

Racking Second Batch, Final Gravity Reading

Good question. I don't know how carbonation would effect a reading but I am sure it would throw it off.

    Over carbonated gassy beer

Yeah 22, 22 oz bottles is under 4 gallons of beer so there was too much priming sugar. You can add water to the fermenter before pitching yeast to hit 5 gallons.

Heck... So I need at least three primaries?

Yeah I guess we all have our hayday! I was a big funnel/shotgun guy in college. Once drank an entire gallon of beer in 10 minutes (I will spare you the details of how I did it!). I am just trying to wrap my head around how perfect NZgirls sounds haha!

Racking Second Batch, Final Gravity Reading

Nutritional Information * ABV: 8.2 * IBU: 19.3 * SRM: 5.1 * Calories: 222.0 Thats from Destination beer so you are right around there. I never knew that beer was that strong before!!! But then Realbeer.com has it at 4.8% so I am not sure. The OG seems high but I am not the...

Heck... So I need at least three primaries?

Wait, is this just you drinking 7-8 per day or are you and family/friends/roommates consuming that amount per day? I know, like Aussies (sorry for the comparisson), Kiwi's drink more beer per capita than North Americans (and possibly the Irish and Germans too!) but if it is just you how the...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

+1 and while PET bottles may be poor fashion for beer snobs like myself they are quick and easy to clean/sanitize/re-use. Like I said I think I am going to pick a couple of Mr. beer kits up, one for a gift and one for me to subsidize my brewing habit!

    Sanitizer Question....

Thanks to Revvy and others all my cleansing/sanitizing fears have been eased. As a new brewer I was petrified of dirty gear and the lady at one LHBS sold me on C-Brite (which I hate). I was gathering up all my cleaning supplies and preparing to assess them. I had bleach, C-Brite (basically...

carboy never gets full enough to use blow off

Some argue that Krausen can cause beer headaches or hangovers but that seems a bit much. I mean even a small quantity of beer can cause a small hangover so whats the difference? Alcohol dehydration, other elements in the beer that causes headaches, etc... I don't know if there is a big flavor...
