    Infected Starter? (PICS)

I just bought it from Northern Brewer 8/14 (a month ago). The day it arrived I immediately put it in my refrigerator. The other part of handling is how (mentioned earlier), the smack pack was smacked, sat out for an hour, and placed back in the fridge on accident for an hour. I took it out...

    Infected Starter? (PICS)

Nope, made sure it was floating freely. Wondering if the 2month age of the yeast (and 50% viability) affected it.

    Infected Starter? (PICS)

About 75F, room temperature in our house. Two things different about this starter: 1) I smacked the pack and after two hours at 75F, wife put it back in the fridge on accident for an hour. Took it out and it didn't really balloon up. 2) Manufactured on 7/16, about two months ago. Yeast...

    Infected Starter? (PICS)

Just confirmed the "final gravity" of the starter is 1.035. The OG started at 1.040. That doesn't seem like a lot of fermenting...

    Infected Starter? (PICS)

For such a large starter, I'm used to seeing a lot more yeast sediment on the bottom (for ale yeast at least). Maybe this is normal for lager yeast? They stay in suspension or something?

    Infected Starter? (PICS)

A 5 gallon batch with 1.045 OG. Should be ~4.6% ABV in the end.

    Infected Starter? (PICS)

Hi HBT, Does this starter look infected? It is a 2L starter of white labs 2206 Bavarian Lager yeast. I used one pack manufactured 7/16/2020, two cans of Propper starter, and two bottled-waters. I did a stir starter one week ago for a 36 hours and chilled in my keezer for 3 days at 45F. MOLD...

Contains No Juice DIPA - Alvarado Street Brewery All Grain Clone

I'm also going to try underpitching, 80% of the recommended rate by brewers-friend. I heard underpitching some yeasts can create more fruitiness. Whether it's true or not, I love the experimentation of homebrewing!

Contains No Juice DIPA - Alvarado Street Brewery All Grain Clone

Thanks TwistedGray, I'm going to brew this next. This beer from ASB flies off our shelves too in Sacramento. It's really damn good. Just ordered some vials of a Sacch Trois yeast, and it sat in the 100F mailbox for 2 days -_____- I completely forgot. Testing them in a starter now to see if...

My DIY Glycol Chiller has Rust

Hi HBT, My DIY glycol chiller, made from a window AC unit, has formed rust after two years. The AC unit was very old and used when I first built the chiller, and unfortunately I forgot to spray Rustoleum on it. Should I build a new one before my pump dies? The reservoir is a 14 gallon cooler...

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

Brundog, If I run the RIMS at higher flow, and vertically, I avoid this stratification. I'm considering using my CFC as a herms coil for single infusion mashes. HLT would heat all water to mash temp. Then RIMS to heat the strike volume the rest of the way so dough in will hit mash temp...

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

Hi Brundog. Thanks for taking a look. You have a great website on automation, and a great reputation on this site. I automate for a living, and damn! Good job. When I tested vertically, the probe detected the peak temperature, and the actual exit temp (sparge tube in the MT) was lower...

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

Hi guys, I appreciate your eagerness to debug more, you may be on to something. Unfortunately, I’m not game. It’s just hard to find the time. We just had a new baby :). I’m going to return it and purchase their smaller tube to eliminate the issue altogether. Thanks Vale, processhead, and...

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

I mean the temperature of water coming out of the tube that sparges at the top of the mash tun.

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

I'm aiming for 1 qt/min. I've never done this before. But I'd like to go slow. Vertically oriented, I'm detecting the hotter liquid. This would be safer, it'd prevent scorching. I tried a test vertically. Ramp from 100 to 149. The PID reached 149 very quickly (maybe 5-10 minutes). I...

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

On the air bubbles, I pivoted my RIMS tube back and forth (facing vertical, then horizontal) a few times, it released some air bubbles. I hoped this would solve the issue. Then I ramped from 73F to 80F on the PID. Monitoring the sparge tube still showed temperatures of 90-100F. Doug...

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

Ahks, My rims tube is 2 inches in diameter. It is horizontal. With the inlet facing down and the outlet facing up. The element is on the inlet side. 1350W foldback 30 watts per inch density. The probe is on the outlet side. The tube is tri clover. The probe is a tri clover pt100, 2.3...

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

At 150F, both the probe and my thermometer agreed. At slow flow, could the hot water be trickling by (or sneaking by) the probe, like in a thin hot stream? I want this slow flow. What if I turn the RIMS exit port downwards? So the hot water may saturate the top of the tube instead of...

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

Vale, The resistance of red to white wires was 106.3 ohms at 75F. According to https://technitemp.com/rtd-pt100-temperature-resistance-table/, 75F should have a resistance of ~109.3 ohms. Processhead, I will check the difference in ice water. I have two RTD cables I can try. One has metal...
