reeeeeeeeeeeeeealy! hmmm. i suppose i could google this but i'll ask you too: does chloramine dissipate given time like chlorine does?

Better Bottle still smells of yeast

whaaa???? this is the first i've heard of such! I always thought that a) the plastic that the better bottle is made of is hard enough and b) the nylon bristles of the brush are soft enough ...that it wouldn't be an issue. I'm not trying to be a prick or anything, I definitely...

    Cooling wort like a noob.

+1 - excellent post! it's all about the DIFFERENCE in temps - laws of thermodynamics and all... save the ice until the last!

Better Bottle still smells of yeast

other than the microfiber cloth swishing around, any other manual scrubbing? personally, i've avoid bleach for fear that the odor would linger. I guess a very dilute bleach solution and an absurd amount of rinsing would be a last resort... but before that, I say go ahead and invest in a good...

    Two starter questions

    1. I usually do not account for the starter volume, at least not on paper. I do a starter most of the time, so now that I think about it, I think I unconsciously account for it... 2. Yeast Nutrient? meh. I think that's one of those things that sounds good on paper, but really it's not worth...

need hekp with my first all grain brew

You're likely to get some input from some brewers with more experience than I at all grain, but until they chime in, I'd say to not fret about being off on the preboil volume one bit. Just boil that sucker down to 5.5gal or whatever your mark is to start your hop additions and final 1hr boil...

    PUR Water Filter

I have to wholeheartedly disagree w/ the "if the tap water tastes good, brew with it" idea. At one point, I had that mentality, and it nearly cost me the hobby! I drink my tap water all the time (Chicago, Lake Michigan) and it tastes great to me. So, I used it when I got into brewing. With...

3 FLoyds Zombie Dust attempt. Help/info requested

I brewed up the recipe earlier in this thread a few weeks ago - tomorrow is the last of the 10day dry hop. When I checked it last week halfway through the dry hop, it was SO FRIGGIN GOOD. From what I remember (I only had this on tap at the Bavarian Lodge while they had it), this is not a...

    Tutorial for Shipping Beer

I've had great success shipping beer by using plastic bottles - not only do you not have to worry about breakage, but saves a lot of weight, too! The plastic bottles are more expensive, but I believe you save that much in shipping costs and packaging. Here they are at northern brewer.

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

I'm slowly climbing (or perhaps descending) the ladder of laziness. Last night, instead of following this yeast *****ing procedure, I just swirled up the trub remaining in my primary and poured it into isopropyl alcohol-sterilized mason jars. Labelled, and popped em in the fridge. Problems I...

Drawbacks of boiling with your immersion chiller the entire 90~60 min boil.

    Help with water report-astringency

Wow, you certainly make a convincing case for ro units. I may actually look into it! Do they remove everything from the water (you're left with distilled basically) or just some stuff?

    Help with water report-astringency

Off the cuff, it seems extreme - but I've had an ENORMOUS improvement in my brews by switching to bottled water. Distilled for extracts, and Spring Water for All Grain. And even though all those jugs sitting everywhere seems extreme, when you consider you're spending $30-$60 for a 5-gal batch...
