Immersion Chiller - 25 ft. Copper vs. 50 Foot Stainless

That's a very good point. I'm not sure, but I think it would be close. Since I plan to sanitize the chiller by boiling it in the wort, the whole thing might not get sanitized. That sounds like a good reason to go with the 25.

Immersion Chiller - 25 ft. Copper vs. 50 Foot Stainless

Hi all, I am looking for an immersion wort chiller that comes with attached hose or barbed fittings. (I know it's possible to make a DIY chiller, but I'm not that handy. I'm looking for something that will work right out of the box.) :) I'm looking at two chillers from Northern Brewer: a...

AG Batch #1 - Mash Temperature Loss

I brewed my first all-grain batch yesterday. My target mash temperature was 151, but my mash was at 148 after 15 minutes, and 143 after 20 minutes. (At that point, I added 1 qt. of boiling water.) I'm trying to figure out why I lost so much heat. Here are the details: I used a 5 gallon...

    British Bitter - Mash Temperature

I'm planning a British bitter for my first AG batch, and I'm trying to decide on the mash temperature. In a article in BYO on ordinary bitter, Jamil wrote: The lower the starting gravity of your bitter, the higher your mash temperature should be.... A mash temperature around 152–154 °F...

    Your Batch Sparge Technique?

Lots of good advice here, thanks all. (Like the importance of stirring after adding sparge water. I wasn't aware of that.) Because the grain bill I'm planning is small (8.1 lbs.), even if I mash at 2 qts./lb., I will only run off 2.5 gallons of my 6.5 gallon pre-boil volume from the mash...

    Your Batch Sparge Technique?

I just bought a mash cooler for my first all grain batch, and I'm planning to batch sparge. I've read numerous threads on this and other forums about batch sparging, and techniques seem to be all over the place. Since many of the threads are from 2008-2012, I would appreciate hearing what...

    AHS Boddington Extract Kits

My brother-in-law is a big Boddington fan, and I'm looking for an extract kit to brew with him. Austin Home Brew has two: a Boddington Bitter and Boddington Pub Ale. I'm leaning towards the Pub Ale, because it sounds like a more flavorful beer. Anyone have experience with either of these...

What came in the mail for you today?

Two packages of yeast from MoreBeer - Wyeast 1469 (West Yorkshire) and Wyeast 1318 (London Ale III). Nothing too special, but I'm delighted because I received the yeast less than 20 hours after ordering it. (MoreBeer has a warehouse near Pittsburgh). I went to take out the trash this...

    WLP013 - Overwhelming Oak Aftertaste

Will do. I plan to try another bottle around the New Year. If it's not any better, I'll keep this batch around until I need the bottles.

Old Hops - Bittering or Aroma

I have some Fuggle hops that have been in the refrigerator in a Zip-loc bag for about a month. I would like to use them in an English bitter I'm brewing this weekend. My plan is to use them as 60 minute bittering hops, and to use fresh hops at 45 and 5 minutes. Does that make the most sense -...

    WLP013 - Overwhelming Oak Aftertaste

For my first extract brew without using a kit, I made the Worthington White Shield clone from Brew Your Own British Real Ale. Because it's supposed to have come from the Worthington brewery, I used WLP013 (London Ale Yeast). According to White Labs, this yeast provides a "complex, oakey ester...

    Two British Yeast Questions - WLP013 & Wyeast 1469

Hi all, I have two unrelated questions about British yeast: 1. For my first extract brew without using a kit, I made the Worthington White Shield clone from Brew Your Own British Real Ale. Because it's supposed to have come from the Worthington brewery, I used WLP013 (London Ale Yeast)...

Yeast for ESB (other than 002/1968)

I'm going to make an ESB as my first partial mash beer. Any recommendations for a liquid yeast other than White Labs 002 or Wyeast 1968? From what I've read, those yeasts require a diacetyl rest accomplished by raising the fermentation temperature for a few days. My basement stays around...

    Ferm. Temperature with Water Bath

What is the lowest temperature on your aquarium heater? I've been looking for one that can hold 64 or 65F, but it seems that most of them don't go below 68.

    Ferm. Temperature with Water Bath

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. Much appreciated. I've been using a 60 qt. rolling Igloo cooler to cool my 6.5 gallon bucket, and I've been very pleased so far. I cool the water to 64F with reusable ice packs the night before brew day, and I find the water is pretty close to that...

    Ferm. Temperature with Water Bath

I've been controlling fermentation temperatures by submerging my fermentation buckets in a water bath in a 60 qt. Igloo cooler. I typically fill the cooler so that the water level matches the top of the beer in the bucket. I then add reusable ice packs to manage the water temperature. I...

    Diacetyl Rest with WLP 002

I'm thinking of making an ESB with WLP 002 as my first partial mash beer. I understand that WLP 002 requires a diacetyl rest. I also understand that many people accomplish a D-rest for ales by starting fermentation in the mid-60s and letting the temperature rise to 70+ after a few days...

How Long in Primary after FG Reached?

Interesting. I've been working on British bitters, and some people claim that leaving the beer on the yeast too long can "clean up" the fruity ester flavors that can be desirable in a bitter. (For example, British Yeasts, Fermentation Temps and Profiles, CYBI, Other Thoughts...). I left...

Anheuser-Busch InBev Acquires Northern Brewer & Midwest Supplies

After buying my first three kits from NB, I went to LHBS for the first time on Saturday to get supplies for batch #4. The main motivator was that I don't like ordering liquid yeast by mail. After reading this disappointing news, however, LHBS will be seeing much more of me. This deal seems...

"British Flavor" Killed by Extended Primary?

It's definitely on the small side - 1.043 OG.
