Extract Brew + Steeping Grain = Too Sweet?

I based the use of Amber on the other extract recipes that I made with kits ... but that is great feedback, thank you. Even the use of 1lb of 20L came from other kits I followed ... To the forum: In a well-watched 5 gallon pot, how much water/extract do you recommend in a boil?? I was...

Extract Brew + Steeping Grain = Too Sweet?

Thanks everyone for the fantastic replies. Yooper's comment about partial boil hop utilization is particularly interesting! Just to give a specific example for the sake of the conversation, here is the recipe for my IPA recipe (that I am drinking as I write this, the sweetness stops bothering...

One Keg Foam, One Keg Fine!

With every snarky remark I get from you on the forum, I consider myself a better brewer... Cheers! :mug:

One Keg Foam, One Keg Fine!

I must have lost it and forgot it during the cleaning process. I used the o ring from the gas in post as a quick fix till I can get to the HBS for a new set. I am sure I am wasting some co2 at the moment, but probably not nearly as much as I was from purging the keg thinking that it was over...

Extract Brew + Steeping Grain = Too Sweet?

I oxygenate with the "stir like crazy" method. I do not make starters though .. great thought for tomorrows brew though!

One Keg Foam, One Keg Fine!

Just to close out my own post, I will post the solution to my problem. The keg was in no way actually over carbonated. MY earlier attempt only worked because after purging the keg, the pressure was too low for the REAL culprit to act up! Turns out that I had a faulty O-ring on my dip tube...

Extract Brew + Steeping Grain = Too Sweet?

Good point. I will do some homework on measuring yeast health. All 3 batches reached their intended FG. Unfortunately I don't have a temperature controlled environment to put them in for fermentation. I live in an apartment in the North East. So my air conditioner is on basically all the...

Overcarbed Keg? Here's an INSTANT SOLUTION!

Glad I found this thread! Just took a overcarbed keg, flipped it over with the beer line on, opened the tap (with a pitcher beneath it), left it open until there was no action. Shook it and repeated 2 times. Once I reattached to the gas line, I got a bit more foam followed by a perfect pour!

Extract Brew + Steeping Grain = Too Sweet?

So I just tapped my third IPA made from extract. The first 2 were kits from Midwest, the third was my own concoction. They all have a slightly different hop profile, but they all have one thing in common: they are way too sweet for my liking. This has masked the top flavors and made them all...

One Keg Foam, One Keg Fine!

All of this while enjoying a beer from the other tap :)

One Keg Foam, One Keg Fine!

They were completely disassembled, cleaned, sanitized, leak checked. I just managed to pour a good pint from the weiss keg. I took out the keg pouring all foam, vented it fully, lowered the serving PSI to 10, poured off one last glass of foam, then a perfect pour. Seems strange to me...

One Keg Foam, One Keg Fine!

After weeks of tinkering with my recently purchased kegging equipment, I finally had a totally successful setup (after many great recommendations from this forum)! Went through a whole keg for a party, and it was perfect pours and perfectly carbonated beer every time! Cut to last week: I...

What is growing on my grapefruit?!

Just closing the loop for any future viewers of this post. Kegged and bottled some of this batch. Results were HORRIBLE. It was most definitely wild yeast. Incredibly acidic off flavors and tons of issues with carbonation. I am assuming it was due to poor sanitization of the grapefruit...

    Wild Yeast and Carbonation Issues

Thanks for the keg setup feedback. I will be trying the start long and cut down progressively approach. It seems that the forums and calculators all give wildly different advice. I believe my current problem is one regarding temperature and line length (The foam/little of beer that pours is...

    Wild Yeast and Carbonation Issues

Thanks for the feedback. I have a second tap that I will be using this weekend, so I'm not concerned about contaminating my next brew. Also, I bought tons of extra tubing so i can find the find balance for my setup. The previous owner of this kegerator had slightly less line than I am...

    Wild Yeast and Carbonation Issues

Recently I accidentally infected a Pale Ale with wild yeast (due to poor sanitation of a fruit addition). Not a huge deal, lessons learned, didn't waste much time/money on it. Around the same time I purchased a corny keg and kegerator set up but had to replace all of the beer and gas lines...

Problems with my first kegging venture!

Thanks everyone for the quick and informative feedback. So my last remaining question is: After I vent the keg and let it thaw and increase my line length (ill switch to 3/16 in the near future), what next? Do i set to serving pressure and wait a few days, or do I set to a higher PSI and...

Problems with my first kegging venture!

I admit, I definitely didn't do my due diligence on this one .... First I started by looking at Force Carbing techniques, then I clearly misdiagnosed the problem, then I tried to fix the wrong problems. I figured that over-carbed beer would come out carbonated + a lot of foam... Not...
