Show us your sculpture or brew rig

My rolling brewery. Everything needed for brew day contained on one cart. Unpack it, brew, pack it back up and roll in for storage.

First BIB didn't go so well...

    1. Use your mash vessel to hold the grain bag. It is still technically 3 vessel but you won’t have a stuck spare. 2. If your gravity was that high does that mean BIAB was that much more efficient or was something else different?

    Trouble with online retailers

It might not just be online retailers but a symptom of the low unemployment rate. It is hard to get quality employees for this kind of work. For example, I have a customer in an unrelated business that runs a warehouse. They open positions for people to pull and ship inventory. Of 100 people...

    Stout Mouthfeel

The temp drop is part of learning your equipment for all grain. I don’t warm up my mash tun but I do know how much it will drop the temp and I add that to my strike water temp so that my final mash temp is where I want it.

    Stout Mouthfeel

I didn’t see the mash temp in your write up online. I would target a higher mash temp before anything else to get the stout mouthfeel.

Why are homebrew people SO cheap??

Actually, probably not so much these days. When states started legalizing marijuana it cut into the illicit drug trade. Many of them moved to making meth in an industrial level. You can get Mexican meth cheaper than the ingredients to make meth yourself. In all seriousness there has been an...

New to sour brewing, have questions...

I can’t help you with your sour but I like your icon. T-I-G-E-Rrrrr-S.

Return To Homebrewing: Homebrewing with kids?

I wasn’t a great student in science when I was young. Now I wish I had paid more attention in chemistry class now that I am trying to balance water profiles. I feel like if I had been exposed to something, not necessarily brewing, that interested me I would have been a better student. I try to...

Return To Homebrewing: Homebrewing with kids?

I figure that by the time she is old enough to drink she will have an appreciation and stay away from yellow fizzy stuff. :)

Return To Homebrewing: Homebrewing with kids?

My daughter is 7 and I let her help me brew as much as she wants to. I am giving her exposure to the science part but not pushing it on her. Sometimes she goes off and plays, sometimes she helps me mash in. I had so much pride the last time I made a stout and she smelled the crushed grains when...

Dry Hopping Using Micron Mesh Cartridge

I have used ones likes these in the boil. Take a lesson from me if you are using these. That little pin on the top of the lid, take a pair of pliers in the under side of the lid and bend the legs of the pin back up thru a hole and then bend them over. I had the pins pop out of my lid and the can...

    Film ring in carboy

I added this to my brewery this past year. It has really helped to loosen things off the inside of my fermenter and boil kettle. I have been thinking about taking my tube bender that I used to make my wort chiller and putting a little more of an angle on it to make it easier to get the inside...

    Starter calculator for cultures

I use the one at brewers friend.com. For starting cell count I use .001. I use a "glob" off my slant and put in 200 ml then step up to 1800 ml. The rule of thumb is to step up 10x so go from slant to 1/10th the final starter size up to about 500 ml. Over that it is hard to get a good growth from...

    Glass Breaks

This flask was a Kimax #26505 2000ml. It would have come out of one of Dad's labs years ago when the lab was disposing of equipment. In the flask's defense, I autoclave my starters in a pressure cooker so they have had many cycles of intense heat and cooling. That alone could have weakened...

    Glass Breaks

My father used to be a microbiologist in a lab and he had two sayings. 1. Round objects roll. 2. Glass breaks. The meaning was to watch when you put down a thermometer or hydromerter. They will roll right off the table and when they hit the ground...glass breaks. Also for glass breaks...

    St. Louis Breweries

Did you go to the Taproom or Bottleworks location? I have been to Bottleworks a number of times and the food was good. Has been years since I was at the Taproom so I cannot comment on that. Also, if you get outside the city, Trailhead in St. Charles is family friendly and has good food.

Anyone else not buy retail beer?

I usually keep standard styles of beer on tap and we will buy seasonal beers that we don't want a keg or two around. When life gets in the way and pipeline gets too low my wife will buy commercial beer. Recently I had a "well duh" moment and realized that if my tap runs out we don't need to...

When Do You Need A De-Humidifier For Your Keezer

I keep a bucket of damp rid in my keezer. Eventually it will get saturated. I don't ever see condensation or anything in my keezer so I assume it works.

Mash is Efficient, Not Rinsing All Sugars

It did seem high to me too. I have been getting .08. Since I had double milled the grain and got more smaller pieces I was thinking that maybe the absorption went up (more exposed grain was able to take up more water). Since I had changed one variable, the milling, I wasn't sure if that was...
