The original BIAB. Early 1990's memory

No way! That is EXACTLY how I began and in the same year, too. My wife bought it for me, also. I think it was for my birthday. I remember doing a lot of convincing myself it was good. Flat as could be, iirc

Need I add Chalk or Baking Soda to Dark Beer?

Yep. Here's hoping your next brew day will go a little smoother! Prost!

To Keg or Not to Keg

Yeah, it's a slippery slope. I bought that same freezer from Lowe's and it holds 5 kegs with room to spare. Since I already had a kegerator, I turned it into a lagering chamber. I have nine kegs all filled with lagers: five in the new freezer, and four on tap in the kegerator. Next upgrade: a...

Did your alcohol tolerence change around 40?

I can agree with that! I also tried an experiment this past weekend. The last couple weekends before this past one, I found myself waking up with killer headaches after a few pints (3-4) of pretty strong beer (7-8%). So this last weekend, I drank a glass of water after every single pint, and...

Need I add Chalk or Baking Soda to Dark Beer?

Assuming no other unforeseen problems with the brew, I don't think you've made BAD beer because of that. It might be perceived a little more malty and a little less hoppy, but then again it might not be so evident. I find the differences water changes make to be subtle. Hope you're happy with it...

    Grainfather!!

Happy brew day! I'm sitting here on the deck enjoying the 70+-degree temps and the first beer I ever brewed with the GF on 1/1/16, a Saison. Life is good!

Need I add Chalk or Baking Soda to Dark Beer?

I just did a German pils and targeted Düsseldorf. I ended up with 60.5 ppm calcium, 74.7 ppm sulfate, and 55 ppm chloride by adding .5g/gal gypsum and .4g/gal calcium chloride to 100% ro water. It's lagering now.

    Homemade Bread Thread

Easiest thing to do is order one of the little freeze dried packets from Breadtopia. I tried growing them up homemade many times, and it's just easier if you start with a known culture of the appropriate microorganisms. It'll eventually mutate to reflect your own environment anyway since you're...

    Experiences with jury duty

Ahh. Hmm. That bit of information calls for a beer.

    Style based suggestion software?

Well, Jesus. How disappointing! That's the shortest spat I've ever seen on HBT. I'm going to bed now.

    Experiences with jury duty

Ok, I'm showing my ignorance here, but I thought the right to a trial by jury was one of our basic rights. I COULD get off my fat butt and go look it up, but I need a short nap first ;)

    Experiences with jury duty

I don't claim to be an expert on the judicial system (i don't teach social studies) or anything really, but we do have that discussion in class about why it's setup the way it is. I think part of the reason stems from the enlightenment/revolutionary values prevalent when this country was...

Who works in the beer industry?

Brother-in-law is craft beer manager for a distributor. His job is finding and signing new distribution contracts with breweries while predicting future trends in beer popularity. Can be problematic because the number of breweries ready and able to meet demands is relatively small, and then the...

    Experiences with jury duty

That's the conflict in the book Twelve Angry Men, which I teach in my English class. 12 dudes all have to agree in whether a person is guilty of murder. Really, really good play (and movie) if anyone is interested. The themes are whether it's actually possible to get a fair trial when everyone...

    Brewing with Walnut Wood

Well if that's what you think, you're going to go through life being misunderstood. Sarcasm and other extra-linguistic information are NOT transmitted electronically. That's why emojis were invented.

    Getting Frustrated with Beersmith

I've seen a lot of bickering on HBT today, kids. Must be something in the water. :)
