    Building a wort chiller

Nevermind the plate chiller. I found this great kit: http://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/DIY_Immersion_Chiller_Kit_50ft_p/diy-immersion-chiller-50-kit.htm Bought that, will have fun assembling it :)

    Building a wort chiller

My wort is pretty clear, but I have a bit of flour at the bottom each time (I use wilser bag but my grain is pretty small so some flour pass). I don't think this would block the chiller, since it doesn't block the kettle spigot. I will decide between plate chillers and counter flow chiller. Do...

    Building a wort chiller

Thanks guys, I'm now considering a Plate Chiller instead. So how does one control the temperature with this type of chiller? With an immersion chiller, I would just check and stop the water going in when my temp is on target. How does this one work? If I don't want to use a pump, I need the...

    Building a wort chiller

Okay I have updated my buy list here. If anyone with tubing skills can help me. What kind of adapter would be missing there? I will be using my kitchen faucet. I'm guessing I will also need 2 garden hoses, one for intake and one for outtake? Copper Refrigeration Coil 1/2 Inch x 50 Foot - 58$...

    Building a wort chiller

Rénot dépôt didn't have one. The 1/2 inch X 30ft diameter was smaller than the 3/8 X 25ft. It seems sometimes the diameter is calculated from the outside instead of the whole tube. Can be misleading... Next place I will check: -Home Dépot at 58$ (cheaper so may not be a "true" 1/2)...

    Building a wort chiller

Wow thanks guys I was not expecting that many replies So 25ft is not good for my needs, I will check out to find 50 ft of 1/2 tubing now, going to hit Rénot dépôt directly today. @hezagenius - Good video, not sure I have this level of equipment though (torch, ...) so I may go with the cheaper...

    Building a wort chiller

Hey guys, I want to get an immersion wort chiller to speed up my brew day. I currently use the bath, but it takes around 5 hours to cool down 5 gallons. After checking the prices here in Canada, I found building it would be way cheaper. Too bad I don't live in the US because amazon.com has...

Boil Kettle Improvements for BIAB (With Pictures)

Thanks for the info RedlegEd. I finally just purchased a small adapter for 1$ that screw in the spigot, then I hold a small vinyl tube with my hands from the spigot to the carboy. Your setup looks much better. I will try to build a quick connect like yours when I get better with tubing and...

Boil Kettle Improvements for BIAB (With Pictures)

Just an update on my setup. I copied Gavin setup and it work perfectly. Can now do 10 gal batch on the stove. I just did a 13 gallons test boil on stove with this. Took 1h15 to bring to boil. Here are some pics Just had a problem while boiling with the bungee cord on, I suggest you don't put...

Boil Kettle Improvements for BIAB (With Pictures)

I will experiment with it and let you know if anything melt ;) I think it will be safe, as the element is way under the kettle. Also the element does not create heat on the side of the kettle as far as I know. Just did another brew this weekend but I haven't used insulation. Still need to build...

Boil Kettle Improvements for BIAB (With Pictures)

I will have to check if the material can be heated to 100C (boil temp). I plan to keep the material on since I just use electric element under the kettle, no flame so I think it would be safe! May even makes 10gal batches possible since I could heat more water with this on. As a beginner, not...

Boil Kettle Improvements for BIAB (With Pictures)

Cool! Do you put the isolation cover when you are warming up and boiling also? I figured it could save energy when heating/boiling (less heat loss) and I would just remove the cover when I need to cool down the wort. Here is my buy list so far, probably going today: Material...

Boil Kettle Improvements for BIAB (With Pictures)

Hey Gavin, I am trying to build an isolating cover for my kettle like you did. They don't sell reflectix brand here, so what is the material you are looking for? Here is a list of material I'm considering Nice setup, good to steal your ideas ;)

Reheating mash - take out grain or not?

I learn something new every day! Will check to get the stuff for the iodine test. I am using the standard Safale US-05 yeast, fermented at 20C. Next brew I will keep the yeast from the bottom of the current brew in masson jars so I can reuse the same yeast again. Yes I never waste wort, I...

Reheating mash - take out grain or not?

No wrapping at the moment. Gavin suggested to build a custom wrapping material cover that you can put around the kettle, I may try that later but haven't found the material for cheap (Reflectix). I will start with the entry option of using my winter coat around the kettle ;) Thanks for the tips...

Reheating mash - take out grain or not?

I don't do iodine test on my water/wort. I just use normal tap water. Having the temp drop lower than mash temp is not a problem right? I'm thinking just letting the temp drop normally after strike temp (160F) I think I could keep mash temp for at least 30min, and the other 30min would be...

Reheating mash - take out grain or not?

I followed this recipe - 60 min mash. My grain are milled as small as I can (smaller than a credit card). If I can save 30min, that would be perfect! how can I check there is enough sugar in the water? the gravity should be off with the temperature so high? The beer is now at 1.018 and still...

Reheating mash - take out grain or not?

Good suggestion, too bad my pot is too big to enter the oven (15 gal kettle). I'm thinking maybe do 10gal batches instead of 5gal, more water in the same kettle should take more time to get down, should find a formula to calculate the heat loss, but I think I would not need to reheat!

Reheating mash - take out grain or not?

I guess that was my problem, I did not stir at all during the reheat. I was only stiring at 20min interval, reheating or not. I should find a way to keep the temperature, should be easier than reheating and risk causing this problem again. Thanks guys
