    All oxy

The Tide stuff has detergent in it. Tough to rinse. I have not seen plain oxy clean anywhere for a long time they seem to all be laundry detergent with a bit of perchlorate added.

    Bottling with flip tops?

Me, too. I thought: my flip flops stink!:ban: But seriously; why use flip tops when caps are cheap? Flip tops have their place I guess, but it is not in single beer sessions. I used to have some, but they went with gifting brews.

Just another beginner worried about an infection

RDWHAHB! It is (only) beer, not a nuclear power plant ready to melt down and destroy the entire universe! You do not even have to be "anal" about sanitation, just good. Wash your hands, use weak bleach solution & iodophor is really good enough in most brewing situations. The huge breweries...

US-05 Need some very fast advice

Worry about an infection from chlorinated water? UHH, isn't the function of chlorine to dis-infect? Shouldn't the worry be about the chlorine killing the yeast or adding unwanted flavors? I have used a charcoal filter for city water for the last 10 years, but we have that other chlorine...

urgent!! ready to bottle and found this.

If you expected a lower fg, I would stir it and wait a few days. If not, don't worry have a homebrew.

    Temp overshoots in mash?

Maybe call it a "chewy" stout? It will still be BEER!

    Another Carboy Horror Story

Do you use hot water to clean the glass carboys? That could be the culprit. The last one I broke was sitting empty on the concrete floor of my unheated basement in the winter. My tennis shoe touched the bottom and kablooyie! I guess the temperature gradient was too much.

    Why Arduino/Raspbury Pi/Spark/Beaglebone?

I do have a couple of extra PC's that I found in the trash. They all are capable of Windows10, some have serial & parallel ports. Seems to me that someone that knew what they where doing could utilize one of the super I/o ports easily. PCs do not have to be expensive! My RPI media client...

How to know if your brew is infected

Early on in fermenting the yeast can smell bad. Depends. I have found that an ugly Orange color is a good indication of infection.

How to control the boil kettle?

Here is a good link to a build your own PWM : http://www.dprg.org/tutorials/2005-11a/index.html Oddly enough I found it by Googling that brought me to a homebrewtalk thread that had this link in it. I wonder why I didn't think to use this site's search :smack:

How to control the boil kettle?

A PWM can be built with an LM555 timer chip. Schematics are all over the internet. I can't look right now. They are cheap from China on eBay.

Getting glass carboy clear of brush crud

Hot water in glass carboy? Last time I even thought of that a disaster occurred. I put 2 cups bleach in the carboy fill with cold water let sit for a day or two. All of the stuff falls off. Rinse for a few minutes with cold tap water air dry.

    PIDs no manual control help

EBay? I see several around $30, with an SSR around $28. If you really look hard you might find a better deal. I didn't look very hard.

How many ball valves are really needed?

Most plumbers will say the more valves the better. If you don't need one today you may need it tomorrow. If cost doesn't matter one at each entrance and exit to anything.

Would this work as a grain mill motor?

Too slow. I use an old ventilation fan motor running on 120V with a small pulley to a large pulley on the old Glatt malt mill.

    Blow off tube clogging

Why not let it "open" ferment until the krausen falls? The krausen will be pushing nasties out. That's what I usually do for wildly fermenting brews with no ill effects.

What the Heck am I Growing?

How about the possibility there are 2 different varieties growing and one is getting better conditions this year than last?

    RIMS element keeps blowing

Why? That leaves the possibility that the pump "head" gets stuck in the tube, doesn't it? The element is "blowing" seems to say that there is not enough liquid flowing over it to cool it down. Am I totally misreading heat exchange? I have a ball valve before and after the pump and a gate...
