Bought a microscope, what supplies should I buy?

Yea I've thought about that. There are decent usb cameras that will slide in in place of one of the oculars too.

Bought a microscope, what supplies should I buy?

That's good. For what it's worth I bought my scope (Amscope B490) for $250 on Amazon. It's been a fantastic scope for yeast projects. So even new ones aren't too stupid expensive. If I had it all to do over again I would probably get the tri-ocular type for a USB camera as well as optical. I...

Bought a microscope, what supplies should I buy?

That sucks! Do you have any recourse to get your money back?

Bought a microscope, what supplies should I buy?

I just use the disposable plastic pipettes and measurements in units of "drops". I do make sure to draw the samples while the stir plate is going, and I draw a couple full droppers full and put into a small glass bowl, then I work out of that, using the pipette to stir well before doing the...

Bought a microscope, what supplies should I buy?

I"d recommend a 12 well spot plate to do serial dilutions. I went with a fairly cheap hemocytometer and have been quite happy with it.

    The "Dear" , "Sincerely" thread

Dear Windshield Sun Visor Designers, Have you ever had a morning commute before? The location of the sun is ALWAYS the same a the small area that the visors don't seem to cover. Sincerely, Everyone who lives west of their job.

    Pectic enzyme vs fruit pectin

No pectin and gelatin are very different substances who both happen to be able to thicken stuff (in different ways).

[question] Wild yeast capture/isolation, 0% attenuation??

I guess I had things backwards. I am well aware that hydrometers need calculated to determin fg, but I thought it would still move some kind of relative amount. I figured the refractometer would read lower than the hydrometer. I guess I need to brush up on that, and I guess I'll stick a sample...

[question] Wild yeast capture/isolation, 0% attenuation??

Previous Thread So I got the refractometer out, cleaned up some pipettes and took a few samples today. All of the samples ranged from 1.018 to 1.021. (I started with 1.020 wort) so I'm a little confused. They have been incubating at 83F for just under a week, and shaking once or twice per...

    Reuse starter ?

Cool, sounds like a good way to go. I bought a few smaller flasks for yeast stuff, and they have a threaded cap. I've been loosening the cap and leaving it at that. But I think I would like to get some foam stoppers for the 2 and 5 liter flasks

    Reuse starter ?

How do the foam stoppers compare to just covering the top with sanitized foil?

Awesome! Welcome to the hobby/obsession. I started with a kit that a friend got for christmas and never used. I never gave that kit back!

    Attenuation percentage vs alcohol tolerance.

My brain is having a hard time picturing how both of these factors play together. Does a yeast really stop fermenting after it's attenuation percentage, even if its under it's alcohol tolerance? Say we have a yeast that has an 80% attenuation, and alcohol tolerance of 10%. If I mix up some...

First time catching and isolating wild yeast.

For the past couple weeks I've been diving headfirst into this wild yeast world. I started off by collecting 12 samples of flowers or pine needles etc.. from around my yard and placing them in test tubes with 1.020 wort. . After just a couple days Tube #5 was churning with vigorous...

Desperately trying to find way to connect wort chiller to sink...

I'd highly recommend going under the sink and just hooking on where the faucet feed line connects to the plumbing. If you do it a lot you can even replumb it with a T fitting and a separate ball valve where you can connect your chiller with whatever method you want. If you want to go that...
