Is a single pack of saflager w34/70 OK for Bohemian Pilsner

According to this byo article http://byo.com/grains/item/1717-yeast-pitching-rates-advance-homebrewing we need 1.75 billion cells per liter. 5 gallons are about 19 liters, so I need 34 billion cells. According to this data sheet http://www.morebeer.com/images/file.php?file_id=2452, we get 6...

Is a single pack of saflager w34/70 OK for Bohemian Pilsner

The packs are 11g. I'm OK with making a starter, but I read it's not advised when using dry yeast.

Is a single pack of saflager w34/70 OK for Bohemian Pilsner

I just purchased some stuff online, including a pack of W34/70 before realizing that it's recommended to use two packs of dry yeast for lagers. The problem is, I can't find any homebrew stores in the area that carry it and I'm not very keen on paying yeast + shipping for another pack. How much...

    Saving/Harvesting/Washing Yeast

I see you have a lot of jars and tubes. Do you brew often enough to keep these fresh and in rotation? My problem with liquid yeast is that I brew about once a month and always a different variety which doesn't really lend itself to using the same strain of yeast. One month it might be a hefe...

First Time with Water Adjustment Evaluation

Just realised that I might contribute to the confusion. Bicarbonate is an ion. When it reacts with acid, it acts as a base. When it reacts with a base, it's effectively an acid. That's why I had base in perentheses, it really is just a buffer.

First Time with Water Adjustment Evaluation

I think, I finally understand. Bicarbonate and Carbonate are the main buffers(bases) that make up alkalinity. Since at the ph that we usually work with in brewing, we have primarily Bicarbs, then it's OK to consider it as an extension of Alkalinity. However, I am not sure why it's needed if we...

First Time with Water Adjustment Evaluation

This confuses me. In bru'n water, you have separate table for alkalinity and hardness and separate table for estimating carbonates and bicarbonates based on total alkalinity and ph. Why are you saying that bicarbonate content is the same as alkalinity? Also, all desired water profiles list...

First Time with Water Adjustment Evaluation

I am also trying to learn this water thing, so I am interested in this as well. How much of a concern is his bicarbonate level? I haven't seen good guidelines for bicarbonate, like for boh. pilsner it should be in such range, for ambers in this one and stouts and porters get this much. Is that...

Do you measure wort or air temperature during the diacetyl rest

Thanks everyone for the replies. For those with a heat source, how do you ramp up? Using the ambient temp doesn't work for the rise for me, since it's pretty cold in my garage in the winter. @Gavin, do you trigger diacetyl rest based on time alone or do you monitor gravity?

Do you measure wort or air temperature during the diacetyl rest

I am doing my first temp controlled batch and was trying to follow the brulosopher's ale schedule: http://brulosophy.com/methods/fermentation-schedules There he states that after 2-5 days of active fermentation, he removes the probe to measure ambient temp and bumps to 75 degrees for diacetyl...

Sparge, Mash Water and Preboil Water calculations - over/under-sparging question

Thanks everyone for the responses. This thread helped me worry less about me buying an 8 gallon pot and understand the whole process much better.

Sparge, Mash Water and Preboil Water calculations - over/under-sparging question

I have two extract brews under my belt that turned out fine and I think I want to try AG now. I've been reading a lot on AG before I jump into it and I have some questions and concerns regarding the water calculations. I'm planning on doing batch sparging and I've seen people recommend...

What is your most useless piece of brewing equipment?

If anyone that doesn't need their 5 gallon better bottle is willing to send it my way, I'll pay for the shipping. I can use it for aging mead. My most useless piece of equipment is the bottle brush that came with my beginners kit. I wish I had gotten a rubber seal on my bucket lid instead.

First Time Extract Brewing No Airlock Activity after Two Weeks and re-pitching Yeast

I just wanted to post back that the brew turned out awesome. I liked it, my wife liked it and some friends did :rockin: I had some co-workers say that it's very mild and not hoppy, but hey this is british bitter; not an american IPA.

First Time Extract Brewing No Airlock Activity after Two Weeks and re-pitching Yeast

Hmm, yeah you are right 1.035 is the OG. They don't list FG. I'll get to bottling and check it out in a few weeks. I wish there was a way to treat you all to one of these :mug:

First Time Extract Brewing No Airlock Activity after Two Weeks and re-pitching Yeast

Is it bad that my final gravity is lower than what the recipe says? 1.01 vs 1.035?

I took the airlock off to peak inside before shaking.
