Can you partially fill a keg & carb it properly?

Fill the 5 gal keg, purge with CO2 like normal (alleviating the worry of getting all O2 from a half-full keg), carb like normal, push to 2.5 gal keg after carb (you would have used CO2 to empty the 5 gal keg anyway so the push to the 2.5 gal keg is not really 'extra'). Purge the 2.5 gal keg...

Auber SLY 2352 Never finishes calibration- boils forever!

I feel your pain bt. I only brew once or twice a month and every time I brew I need to think very deliberately about which buttons i push in which order on my BK PID (Kal Clone). I use the BK PID in auto mode to heat up my strike water before I pump it to the MT, then I switch to manual mode...

Breweries and Craft Brew Pubs in Minneapolis

The light rail that runs from the airport can get you to the UM campus, very near to Surly and Town hall (different stops) and you won't have top worry about parking or driving. Can also get you to the Twins game where there is usually a good supply of local brew in cans and on tap...

    Daughters boyfriends that you hate.

I have 3 boys ages 9-14 and a 3 year old girl. Our goal is to keep them so busy with activities (school, sports, camping, fishing, chores, group activities with friends, church groups) that by the time they have some 'free time' they will be done being driven by their hormones and will...

Fermentor Cooling (Snakes, Jackets, HERMS coils)

Yeah, the surface area issue is one of my concerns. I also thought about getting rid of my Stout setups and going to BrewTech and FTSS with a glycol chiller but I would miss the 3" triclamp in the lid of my Stouts which I can drop a twistcap dryhopper thru. On the topic of the FTSS, how easy...

Fermentor Cooling (Snakes, Jackets, HERMS coils)

I have 2 14.5 gallon stout tanks fermentors. I have two 90w Peltier cooling chips on one fermentor and four 90w Peltier cooling chips on the other using Stout's aluminum cooling blocks. I can get to 4 chip FV down to 50F in a 70F room (used it at that temp for a Kolsch). I've only used the 2...

    Top 10 Favorite Breweries

I am a west coast IPA junkie but my fallbacks are session IPAs, summer wheats and saisons. With that in mind (INPO): Stone Ballast Point Lagunitas Founders Bells Deschutes Ommegang Liftbridge Hill Farmstead Surly I'm sure Russian River would displace one of the above if my palate...

Tampa Weather: Rain, Rain & More Rain...

Lived in Tampa for 8 years in the 90s. Loved it, miss it. My favorite thing was the starch in my shirt lasting about 8 seconds after i stepped outside each morning ;) I could be a wrinkly slob and look like everyone else :)

    Coffee on nitro

I have cold press coffee on tap at home as I like cold coffee conveniently available. I don't like fizzy coffee and I don't care about the 'cascade'. That said: I use ~2 pounds of french press grind coffee in a hop bag and 2.5 gallons RO water with a pinch of salt (NaCl) and let it soak for...

    AHA Surly Wort Rally

Fermented with the trois blend for 9 days and it stayed at 1.016 for the last 4 days. (I previously posted 1.010 at 5 days but realized i read the refractometer wrong: 7.5 Brix not 6.5) Little funk, sour while kegging. On CO2 right now. will taste again in a week. Seems like it would be a...

use grapefruit juice or zest in secondary?

Agree. I zested 8 grapefruit and put the zest in 1-1/2 pints of Everclear (the real stuff at 190 proof) for 3 days. I saved the liquid (extract) and discarded the zest (which was paper dry by that time). I put 1-2 drops in a 12oz glass of my pliny clone and it gets a very nice grapefruit...
