Commercial bottles with labels that come off easily ~

For all those who don't own wort chillers

Until my recent move to AG, I was brewing extract batched on the stove top and chilling in a sink of ice water. That meant 2-3 bags of ice for each batch... While planning to make the jump, and looking into building a CF chiller, I found a 25' CFC on Amazon for slightly more than I could build...

    What kettle to buy?

I just received a Spike Brewing 15 gal kettle for my birthday and I'm impressed. Heavy, nice welds and they offer horizontal or vertical port placement. Horizontal ports seem like the call for BiaB. I don't think you can go wrong with Spike. d

    Anybody Follow MotoGP Racing? *Spoilers*

Another MotoGP fan here! Yup, it's great to see the Doctor having a revival, Dovi running the Duc so well and of course, the raw talent of MM. I'll make Indy someday but not this year. I am still considering a drive down the coast to Laguna Seca for the MotoAmerica/WSBK weekend. We were there...

Double IPA Pliny the Elder Clone

I brewed an extract/steeped grain version of this again last week and we're approaching the first dry-hop but, after a trip to the LHBS, I'm adhering a bit closer to the original hop schedule for comparison. I'll have to rely on memory to judge the difference as I only have 1 bomber left of the...

Double IPA Pliny the Elder Clone

I brewed my second partial mash version of PtE just over six weeks ago. I used a secondary for dry hopping (and made some hop substitutions), bottled at 4 weeks and just had a couple samples yesterday as they hit the two week mark in bottles. Wow! Way better than my first attempt! Steeped 9oz...

What do you do with your spent grain

Our chickens and ducks love spent grain... Our oldest St. Bernard will also eat it if I turn my back.

How do you know which commercial brews are bottle conditioned?

Jim, I can't say personally. My first yeast harvest was merely an exercise and the second is bulking up for a shot at a Racer 5 clone in the near future. Good luck Sinc, d

How do you know which commercial brews are bottle conditioned?

Jim311 I've been at this for less than a year so take this with a grain of salt, but I've harvested yeast from a couple commercial beers on as many attempts and it is pretty straight forward. When your starter smells like beer you've been successful ;) . I have Bear Republic's Racer 5 IPA yeast...

    eBIAB Wiring Question

The switch would be before the contactor... A contactor is simply a relay (an electrically activated switch) Remember (or learn) ohms law. Also, 240 is a hot(120) + a hot(120) + a ground which is electrically equivalent to neutral. Neutral and ground are tied together at the main panel.

    What are you drinking now?

As a finale, I'm on to my first brew... Ms. America Pale ale, a recipe from www.olybrew.com. I'm pleased with it ... not the end-all-be-all- , but not bad (even after I scorched the extract) peace, d

    Are you lazy

I am,as many would put it, lazy... UNTIL I get into something.Brewing beer is a brand new endeavor which I'm enjoying to the fullest. Are the two endeavors different? I'd say, somewhat but not totally. There are parallels and a similar mindset to be sure... Some of us are DIY MINDED while others...

Double IPA Pliny the Elder Clone

I've made mistakes from the get-go but after 2 1/2 weeks, it looks and smells just fine ;)... So, I boiled my extract for the full 90 min, added the first round of dry-hops at the beginning of fermentation and neglected to take an OG reading. I am, however, learning something I believe. I took a...
