Hello HBT!
I need some of your expertise to help me figure out the right build for me. There seems to be so many different builds out there I just find myself getting lost trying to figure out what build would be best for me with the equipment I already have on hand (currently planning for a...
I just got myself a 12 case of 500ml jars and can now start yeast washing (Wooohoo!). Because of my location in North East Alberta it makes it expensive to get liquid yeast in. I have been stuck to using Nottingham and Safale-04 so far (the only yeasts my small LHBS will stock). I was thinking...
That's a great analogy!
I guess I did not properly phrase my question. Almost all the lager recipes I see ask for Europen malts like Pils and Vienna. I wanted to know if I could still make a crips and clean finishing lager using 2 row with cold fermentation and lagering afterwards. As you...
Hello everyone,
So It's starting to get rather cold in my basement this time of year and I just picked up an older fridge a few weeks back. So with that I'm at the point where I can start lagering.
My question is:
What really makes a lager so crisp and clear? Is it mainly the yeast...
Just brewed this a few days ago and everything is going well in the primary. I must say it was some of the clearest wort I have ever gotten after using my wort chiller. Maybe because of how little grain is actually in the bill?
I don't have a hole lot for yeast so I used Nottingham on this...
Glad to hear it! I think I'll follow the original recipe first then throw a little 20L or 40L into it on the next batch to see if I can get a little of that sweet light caramel taste into it while keeping it nice and light in body.
I'll definitely be brewing up a batch tomorrow. This recipe...
Has anyone tried adding some speciality malts to the grain bill? I know the body and taste is fairly light but I'm wondering if a little bit of 20L or biscuit might do well in a lighter beer.
Any thoughts?
Wow! Thanks everyone for all the advice.
So for my Oktoberfest it was to late because I had already pitched the yeast following my original steps.
I had a pilsner kit I used and did as was mentioned and pitched it at below 50F.
Do you think that having the Oktoberfest fest at about 66 for...
My small basement cellar has finally really reached lagering temp (53F according to a glass of water placed in it). I thought I'd give myself an easy one on my first lager and make a Brewer's Best Oktoberfest. It's easy because of the saflager-23 that is a lager yeast that can be fermented at...
So I have just started doing all grain BIABs. I have found that my wort is always so cloudy and full of floaty things. Is this because my grind is to fine?
3lbs each of Crystal 20, 40, 60, 80, 120, Caramunich, Special B, Biscuit malt, Aromatic malt, Chocolate malt and some Black patent . Have everything il need to make just about whatever I'd like now!
Has anyone tried this yet? It's hard for me to get hops in my area. I have Willamette, Pacific gem, Galaxy, Amarillo and Chinook on hand. Willamette seemed like the only sole hop addition I could use. Any thoughts or ideas?
Hello everyone,
Because of my geographically isolated area in North Alberta it's very expensive to get grain of any kind up here. So a few months ago I made the trip down to a major city and loaded up on two fifty five lb bags of grain. One simple 2 row and Pale ale. Could anyone give me a few...
Ha if it was a burner then my cat would have been toast. I was just about to do my first run offs from my very first all grain. She's always there to give me a little company when ever I brew.
I'm sure most of you have one so why not share a picture of your favourite furry brew buddy :).
This is Cheeto bandito brew kitty extraordinaire and defender of the wort.
Hello everyone,
So I have finaly got myself all the basics to do my first 5Gal AG brew this weekend and I am very excited! But I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me put together a non SMaSH brew (already have about 3 SMaSHs I want to make) with the ingedients I have gathered up...
Thanks for the quick reply! Well I'll write this up as me being a uninformed buyer. But it definitely has left a sour note on me because I specifically asked for MO from this store. It's all a learning experience in the end.
Thanks again for the help guys.
So today I got myself 2 55lb bags of malt. One of standard 2 row and the other of what I though was Maris otter. I never looked at the bag until I got home ( I live in a rural area 3hrs away from the lhbs). Can anyone confirm that this is in fact Maris otter? I'm just worried because it only...
