Actually, self pollinated crops, like wheat, barley, oats, soybeans, show very little, if any inbreeding depression. They also show very little hybrid vigor. Hybrid wheat cultivars show only about 10 or 15% hybrid vigor, not enough of a yield increase to pay for the added cost of seed production...

I don't worry about it BUT most of the barley I've malted has been 6 row feed barley so its normally smaller seeds with higher fiber and protein. Its hard to make heavy wort, maybe 20 or 25% more malt but I think my best batches have been made this way. I do rough it up a little and blow out as...

    Semi Commercial micro malting

I have been having similar thoughts. I started working on a kiln last winter but didn't get to far. I am planning on primarily malting heirloom barley and I am still in the process of increasing seed. I should have enough to start playing with next fall. Right now a keezer build seems more...

I started last fall with about the same amount of seed you started with. I grew out about 80 plants in the greenhouse last winter. This spring, I planted about 1000 sq ft with 450 g of seed from the greenhouse. It was too thin of a seeding rate but its what I had. I now have about 24 lbs in less...

Harvest and cleanup finally complete. This year’s yields: Bavarian, 5.4 lbs; Otis, 4.4 lbs; Kitzing, 11.0 lbs; Poppenheim, 2.2 lbs; Moravian, 21.4 lbs; and Chevalier, 23.4 lbs. Not as much as I had hoped but enough to continue next year. I also have a warm, fuzzy feeling knowing I was able to...

Yes, that does really suck. I too will offer my assistance. We are about a month late for best planting date so the quality will not be the best but you can at least get your seed back for next fall. I am set up for planting small seed lots so I would only need a few pounds. It would go under...

Hey Drummstikk, A couple thoughts on some of your pics. Predation: If those pics were taken here, my first guess would be cut worm but I don't know if you have them in CA. Second would be rabbits but they tend to leave a few business cards laying around. Cut worms get to about an inch long and...

'Marris Otter' is one of them. I don't have real high hopes of it making through my winters either but I figured I'll give it a go. 'Otis' was released by Colorado State Univ about 1950 and 'Moravian' was imported by Coors a few year after WWII from Czec. Both were grown in this area 60 years...

Just Found this thread. Makes me think I'm not the only crazy out there. I'm in the middle of malting some barley I grew a couple years ago and I am currently increasing 9 heirloom barleys in the greenhouse to plant out next spring.
