    Infection/mold?

Yea that's a lot of headspace. Was this a secondary? I agree with medic, give it a taste then rack it carefully from beneath if it tastes ok. Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Home Brew mobile app

Headline: Veteran Beer Brewer Can't Make Cider!

It might have. I have had really good luck with the musselmans apple cider that comes in the gallon jugs. I can't find the tree top brand where I live or some of the others that folks here talk about. I still think it's the yeast you are using though. Those wine yeasts ferment dry and loses a...

Headline: Veteran Beer Brewer Can't Make Cider!

I haven't had much luck with lalvin. Or montracet. They have turned out too wine-y for me. Try some Nottingham ale yeast. I have made three batches, one gallon of musselmans apple cider + cup of brown sugar, three week ferment one week second before I had to rack it to my belly, one with a cup...

My cider tastes alright, but just...crude. What can I do to improve it?

I have mixed thoughts about racking. I've made quite a few gallon batches now with different sugars and yeasts and I agree with those who told you to use the Notty - if you aren't a big wine or champagne drinker you're probably not going to be in love with the Montrachet or Lalvins (I'm not, but...

Does this look normal after 2 weeks in?

Looks like star san bubbles to me. I don't see anything alarming. Cider doesn't make much bubbling when you are using champagne or wine yeasts, but if you use an ale yeast be prepared to leave some head room or you will get stuff blowing through the airlocks. I learned the hard way...

Me again... when do you take the first gravity reading??

That depends entirely on your definition of 'losing' :cross: I tend to set aside a day to check the gravity\move things around on all my brews and that little portion usually goes directly into my belly after being measured :p

    How do you cold pasteurize

You might be mixing up terms. You can cold crash, but you have to keep it cold thereafter. If you already planned to keep it in the fridge it's not a problem but beware if you give stuff to friends. Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Home Brew mobile app

    sneaking tastes

I have another question for this lovely forum regarding sneaking tastes and sanitizing! How do you sneak your tastes of the ciders? When the airlock comes off, does it have to be re-cleaned and sanitized again or do you just lay it to the side, take out the bit for the taste and put it right...

Uh oh, first batch, something wrong?

I am interested in trying kegging but not really sure how to do it or what I need. Is there a thread somewhere on here that explains the process\what to buy\etc completely? I've looked at the resources at Midwest but a lot of it seems to assume a lot of existing knowledge. I was planning on...

    Hangover debate...

I haven't suffered a hangover since switching to cider from beer (and believe me, I can put the stuff away). I can't wait to try some home made stuff but I did edworts recipe and I read it really packs a punch. So maybe that will cause a hangover lol

Uh oh, first batch, something wrong?

Thanks for the tip. I'm using the montrachet champagne yeast so I guess that's the robust one? Anyway I decided just to drop the temp a couple degrees. I went home on lunch (what? I'm excited!!) to check on it and it's at like 74 now. I don't want to let it get too much higher, right?

Uh oh, first batch, something wrong?

Ok, good to know. I might bring it down into the high 60s. My cats are all laid out on the floor panting at me lol

Uh oh, first batch, something wrong?

omgomgomgogmogmgomgogm the temp is at 72 degrees now and I woke up this morning - it's bubbling like crazzzzyyyyyy! I put a sweater and a jacket on it too, to try to help a little with the temp. You guys are the BEST! Now time to do another batch. This one should start up faster now...

Uh oh, first batch, something wrong?

Ok I got it to 66 and gave it a couple turns. Really had no idea it was so cold in the house. I live in the mountains so I guess I'm desensitized to it. I hope it was just too cold. Really looking forward to this brew!

Uh oh, first batch, something wrong?

There is literally no activity in the airlock at all. The liquid moved to one side, but that was about it. Also, I was just looking through the kit I bought and it turns out they sent me temp strips. I just didn't know what they were the first time I looked through. So I stuck one on there...

Uh oh, first batch, something wrong?

Thanks for the replies! The airlock is not bubbling at all. At least, not that I can see. I've been staring at it for hours lol The way I ended up putting the sugar in was different from the thread - because I couldn't get it into the musselman containers properly. What I did was I poured into...

Uh oh, first batch, something wrong?

Hello everyone, it's good to join this community! I was an avid beer drinker until one day I woke up and was suddenly fat. Ok not suddenly, but it happened. Anyway, I decided to adopt a paleo lifestyle, and that meant no more beer. Technically no alcohol of any kind, but after much research I...
