First Year Hops in the Southeast

Just thought I would share. Here are some photos of what I've managed this year. Two first year Cascades. I planted them sometime in late March or early April. April 18, 2015: May 25, 2015: July 8, 2015: They're facing south. I definitely give them a lot of water. The soil has some...

    Help identifying these bines

I ordered two Cascade hop rhizomes from a supplier and planted them (first time growing hops). The photos below show the bines I'm getting so far. The leaves from the two plants appear to be pretty different. Is this correct or did I get a mixed up order? Thanks guys for any input...

NB's Cascade Mountains West Coast Imperial IPA - Green, Infected or Bad?

I'm looking for anyone else who has brewed Northern Brewer's Cascade Mountains West Coast Imperial IPA recipe and can comment as to the flavor profile or flavor thoughts about this recipe. This one thus far has not turned out to taste good IMO. I brewed this on New Year's day, secondary'ed...

    HELP: GE 7.0 + STC-1000 = issues?

I got this hooked up, hardwired into the freezer. I know the thermometer probe is free standing in air in the freezer, but the freezer never turned off. I set it to 4.4deg Celcius with +/- 3deg Celcius with a 3min compressor delay, but it got down to like -25deg Celcius and never turned off...

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/guide-set-internal-chest-freezer-thermostat-32f-eliminate-external-control-249612/ Anyone done this with a GE 7.0 Freezer (Model # FCM7SUWW)? Or do I just need to buy a temperature controller? I read through the thread without much promising results...

    Good hops to complement Chinook?

I bought a few kits of the Chinook IPA from NB on their Columbus Day sale and I wanted to make the beer a bit more interesting. I've made 2 of the 3 I bought, and liked them, but for the third, I was hoping to make a hoppier version. The recipe, as is, is more of a Pale Ale, not so much IPA...

Any Chest Freezers on Sale for Black Friday?

Anyone seen a common big box store ads advertising a chest freezer on sale? I'm looking for something and haven't seen anything where I've looked yet. Thanks!

Wife Cleaned Auto-Siphon with Scotchbrite Pad

Is it ruined? She used one of those yellow and green dish washing pads, now its all scuffed up. Will these scuffs harbor bacteria enough to consider it no longer useable? I'm finding a replacement tube is literally $2+shipping, but nonetheless, I have some racking to do meanwhile.

    1.086 OG - Secondary Needed?

I'm currently a week into fermenting a IIPA with 1.086 OG using Wyeast 1272 fermenting at 66-68F in a swamp cooler watched closely. To keep things simple, I've searched without much of a clear answer, though I know this is a debated topic. I am a new brewer, but following advice on this board...

QUICK HELP: OK to NOT Decant 2L Starter?

Long story short, I made a 2L starter 48 hours before my brew day of a big IIPA using Wyeast 1272. After 24 hours, fermentation was going well on the stir plate. However, I wanted to decant so last night (after 24 hours) I put it in the refrigerator hoping to decant. As of this morning, some...

    Chill Starter Despite Active Fermentation

So my 2L starter has been going for 24 hours roughly. I'm planning on brewing tomorrow. The starter was a bit slow to "start" but is now going pretty well, letting off a lot of bubbles on my stir plate. I want to decant the spent wort, however, given my timeline I need to decide to...

Help! My Starter SG is High!

I measured my starter SG using the leftovers in the boil kettle and it measured 14.2 Brix. This was when in an ice bath, so maybe at best it was a bit cold. I'm making a 2L starter and according to the calculator online, my SG is at 1.057. Should I add sanitized water to correct? FYI, I'm...

    Advice needed...

I'm on my second beer. My first was an IPA that's was bottled after 2 weeks and has been bottle conditioning for 2 weeks. It tasted good out of the carboy, but sweet again after 1 week in the bottle. No worries, I hear "3 weeks 70F" so I'm not too worried about that. For learning, I'll try...

    Substitute Yeast Strains

So, is it common for people to substitute yeast strains from ones that recipes call out? I've got some harvested yeast and would like to continue to do so to avoid buying $7 liquid yeast packs for each recipe. However, given the seemingly unlimited number of strain options out there, does...

What sized starter should I use?

Some friends and I have a 5gal NB Cascade Mountains West Coast Imperial IPA (Extract) in the line up to be brewed next. We're sort of new to this homebrew thing, but have come a long way. On my last batch of NB Caribou Slobber (Extract), I did make a simple starter, 1.040 SG 1L starter...

    Looking for a Clone Recipe...

I went to Brazil about a year ago, and the local beer in Rio was Bohemia. Unfortunately, that makes the search for a clone very hard to find as Bohemia, in the US is commonly the Mexican variant, which is not what I'm looking for... They make 4 different beers, the most common being the...

    Hop Choice for Dry Hopping

I am pretty new to this and have come to the realization I may enjoy the flavors imparted by dry hopping. I'm a big IPA fan and have a 5 gallon batch almost a week into primary right now. I want to dry hop this batch, but am not sure which hops to choose. Unfortunately I don't have the IPA...
