I have worked in a hobby (not brewing) store for 12 years. The guys who are always concerned with cost over all else miss out on a lot of the enjoyment. Just my two cents based on my years of conversations with hobbyists.....FYI I am a blue collar guy not a snob with money.
After a year of trying to make beer that tastes like my favorites.....I am concentrating on process and making simple beers like blondes and single hop pales. I'll worry about making a great IPA after I really learn how to use my set up consistently. Keep at it -it gets better!
Thank the neighbor asking and tell him you would be happy to make beer for his next party with the appropriate lead time. This is like asking someone to knit you a Christmas sweater on December 20th.
+1 on this is a hobby not a career. I respect your efforts but efficiency is not my goal. Listening to music, sampling good beer, pull a couple weeds in the garden. These are part of my brew days. Sometimes it is 5 hours snd sometimes it is not.
