    Walnuts in my Rye Mash

So a few days ago, I had an accident and spilled some chopped-up walnuts in my mash. It looks fine so far (didn't want to waste the rye), but I'm curious about whether anybody's ever mixed nuts in with their mash and how it turned out.

    Water in Bloomington, Illinois

^^That could be; sometimes I have wondered. Does anything know something that would help?

One food you have never had... but are curious

Hm...Ever since I heard that Palin had fried butter on a stick, I've been curious. I'll probably never work up the nerve to try it even if I had the chance (sounds like a portable coronary to me), but still... Also, has anybody ever tried alligator meat?

    Ground Turkey

I just browned a pound of turkey to put it in spaghetti. Other than the lighter color and less fat it's not so different from beef.

    Water in Bloomington, Illinois

Wow...I live not far from Bloomington! When I don't want to guess about my water's quality and/or I'm too lazy to test it, I have used filtered water (I have a filter on one of my faucets) with some success.

    Not even vaguely gourmet....

I like to fry some bacon, and then crumble it up on a plate and leave the grease in the bottom of the skillet. I slice up some potatoes, toss them into the bacon grease and fry them with salt and pepper. Top it off with as much cheddar cheese as I can reasonably get away with. Then put the...

Things about your co-workers that annoy you

My favorite? The boss who tried to get me to do work that I wasn't qualified for and hadn't been hired to do. And then she yelped at me for asking questions. I finally just walked off the job and haven't been back.

Bug zapper, I love the outdoors.

No kidding. I have one hanging just outside my window; it's really good about getting the mosquitos. Now if I could do something about the flies that get into my house, I'll be happy.

    First cheese help need!!

Hm...When in doubt, turn to Google. What I'm seeing is that a little mold is normal and can be solved by wiping it down with a rag and heavy salt water. Also, if the mold gets out of control and grows all through your cheese, that can be a sign of a problem with the curds being too dry before...

Belgian Saison .... left it in indirect sunlight today ... crap!

Hm...I've always heard to avoid direct sunlight but my brews have been exposed to indirect sunlight a few times without much of a noticeable effect. Maybe you'll be fine if the sunlight didn't cause your temperature to get out of control and you remember to keep your closet doors closed from...

    Can Bottles be Shipped

The one time I shipped bottles across state lines, I used Fedex. I was a little paranoid and triple-wrapped each individual bottle in bubble wrap, then put that in one of those big styrofoam coolers that they sometimes ship ice cream in, and then put all that in a box and shut it tightly. The...

    How to make mistakes

I suggest that you take lots of notes, both when things go right and when things go wrong. That way you have documentation to go back to when you notice that one brew turned out differently from the rest. And you might want to check out this list of top beginner mistakes...

    My first bad batch

Coconut porter? Now I'm curious. I've made honey porter but not coconut and typically let it sit in the bottle for about seven weeks before I even bother tasting it. Will be good to know how yours turns out.

    Raspberry wheat

In my (limited) experience with adding fruit to beer, fresh works better than frozen. What I do is add the fruit to the primary right after the boil is complete and certainly before the wort has chilled. There is a way to add it during the secondary if you want it to be more pronounced, but I...

    Kitchen brewing equipment

One-gallon batches do seem small, but I recommend just finding a suitable container. If you choose a glass jug as has been mentioned, make sure it's one that will not shatter from the kind of pressure that fermentation creates.

project ideas wanted: 1/6 bbl keg

My first reflex was to use it for another still in case you want to make something besides corny's, or else sell it to someone who needs it for his/her still.
