Black IPA Recipe Critique - Am I Going Overboard?

I believe my og was around 1.068-1.070 and I used wlp 007 the dry english ale strain, next time Ill try either 001 or the new san diego strain 090. Part of my recipe included sugar although I cant remember how much, I want to say it was around a pound for a 6 gallon batch. Turmoil Cascadian...

Black IPA Recipe Critique - Am I Going Overboard?

Id personally scale back the dark malts, and I don't care for the taste of chocolate malt in a black IPA, but that's just my opinion. I'm drinking a pint of mine right now and it had 1.25 lbs of carafa II ( which equated to 7.4% of the grain bill) as the only dark grain and I feel its too...

Brutus Design Help- .120 or .062 Wall thickness?

I went with .120 and I think its way overkill. Id guess it weighs more than 100lbs and I'd feel comfortable using it as a jack stand for a Peterbuilt. Its is however a bit more forgiving when it comes to welding and grinding to make it look decent being that you have more wall thickness to grind...

Chilling and racking prior to fermentation???

Thanks for the input, just for clarification I wasnt really brining this up with the intention being primarily repitching yeast, I was just stating that it may make that easier and be one potential benefit of this technique. I wanted to explore the idea after reading about a cold soak technique...

Chilling and racking prior to fermentation???

Has anyone ever considered or tried chilling your finished wort down to 30-40 degrees allowing it to sit for a few days and racking it off the trub prior to pitching your yeast. At these temps I assume it would be very difficult for an infection to take on the task of fermentation and you would...

    So it begins (Brutus build)

Well its been on a bit of a hold. I have had time constraints that have kept me from working on it. I plan on putting in the plumbing for the gas line this weekend. I also bought some paint which i hope will hold up to the heat. It this stuff here http://www.vhtpaint.com/flameproof.html got the...

Stainless Brutus stand - Not Mine (Orange County)

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/for/1385047090.html Probably not a bad deal considering the price of stainless.

Stainless wall thickness for Brutus 10?

I'm in the process of building my Brutus out of 2x2x.120 and I can tell you its waaayy overkill. I could use this thing to support a house. It weighs a freaking ton. But I don't think I would have gone with anything different.

    So it begins (Brutus build)

I think I will initially go LP just because I'm a lazy ass and don't really want to tap into the house NG line without having established a permanent location for the brew stand. Once I figure out where the thing is going to stay then I may consider going the NG route.

    So it begins (Brutus build)

Thanks for the positive comments. Yes this was my first time welding and I was lucky enough to be able to borrow all the equipment from a friend. Its really not too tough if you have experience building things with tools then you can pick it up pretty quick. Just practice with some scrap and...

    So it begins (Brutus build)

Well after staring at the steel in my garage for the past few weeks I figured it was time I actually started this build. I got a pretty good deal on the steel $50 for 40 feet. I am not an experienced welder or fabricator but I am one of those "I can do anything" sort of people, not outta some...

Promash grain bill % seems off.

I love using Promash but one thing that bugs me is that I cant simply input percentages of each grain then set the SG and have the program figure out how many pounds of each grain to use. I end up calculating this out by hand using the method in Ray Daniels Designing Great Beers. Ex. SG 1.060...

Pumpkin beers: Discussion, developing recipes, tips tricks, and a good practices

I'm considering doing another pumpkin beer this year. Has anyone tried making a "spice tea" and dosing into the finished beer like you would a fruit extract. I found it tough to judge how much spice to use in the boil. Also I know it already been stated but use restraint on the hops.

Gotta Be A Better Way of Getting DME Into a Flask...

I make sure the opening to the flask is bone dry and then pour the DME onto a paper towel, fold the paper towel in half so that you can use it like a funnel and slowly pour the DME into the flask. Add the water to the flask and swirl it up a bit. If your not using foam control I highly recommend...

    DIY corny keg cleaner

Ive seen the other systems using pumps and its just to much stuff in my opinion. I wanted to make my process simpler. This is a cheap easy solution. I like the fact that you get sanitizer or cleaner flowing over all surfaces that the beer touches without having to disassemble the whole thing. If...

    DIY corny keg cleaner

The second one is an "action" shot but its just a PBW water mix going through the lines if you look close you can see a jet of water coming out the pressure relief valve hole. Opps my bad didnt know the photos didnt work hopefully they are up now

    DIY corny keg cleaner

So after taking apart my corny's again to clean and sanitize them for the next batch I decided there had to be a better way so here is what I came up with. Essentialy its a venturi style sprayer that I purchased from Lowe's its one of thoes things you put concentrated weed killer or fertilizer...
