    Refractometer

In addition to what others have said, the light source can make a difference as well. For example a "warm" fluorescent will not give the same reading as full sunlight. It's minor but can make a difference. I did have a problem with inconsistency on the one I use at work once, I would even get...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

Okay trying to keep humor in the derailment. I can weld anything but the crack. of dawn (they dont sell a rod for it) or big Johnson welding rods, you can fill any crack with a big Johnson.

    Am I a homebrewer? NO!

Isn't it a bit silly to gripe about being called a homebrewer on "homebrew talk forums"...

    Slanting yeast

There will be movement, There is vigorous boiling after all. You can stack if your canner is large enough.

    Brewtarget Fly Sparge

I don't know if there is any difference that could be added to the software that would change the brew profile. I kinda doubt it. The problem I had when I was using a 5 gallon tun if I was on the upper end of capacity I would have to do two batch sparges in the software and add them together to...

    Slanting yeast

I'm sure you'll get more experienced replies. But, what has worked for me was starting with warm water in a pot, and frequent stirring with a whisk (not so vigorous as to aerate) while it heats up to a simmer. I never brought it to a boil before going into the pressure canner.

WLP007 - Now I feel like an idiot

Here's how it looks on a stir plate. Oh yeah, if you plan to reuse harvest from the starter. Trying to rinse them from the trub is an exorcise of futility. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Home Brew mobile app

Of bottle bombs and raining beer

Well there's your problem. Any more than 115 grams is asking for trouble. Unless you know for sure it's attenuated very dry, and it's been at room temperature for some time post fermentation. If you've been at normal temperature for your pilsner 80 grams might have been sufficient. Sent from...

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly: A Welding primer for homebrew

Kudos! Good info to put out there for the laymen. My only critiques would be, a little more stress on(any tool used on cres alloys must not have been used on any other material prior),and stating cfm for backpurge instead of resistance to flow. I always liked to have 1-2 inches showing on a...

    Slanting yeast

Finally gave this a try over the weekend. I got my agar and a few tubes from morebeer, since I was making an order anyway. First attempt, total failure. I used the mix ratio on Kia's page, and it got very thick, very quick. At boiling it was yogurt thick. Went through the process anyhow.:smack...

    Pre-made Primer

So, I was canning some wort one day and had the thought. I took some pint jars, weighed out 4 oz of corn sugar into each one. Topped them off with water, put on lids, shake, loosen lids, and process for 15 min. at 15 psi. 4 oz gives me the right volume on most everything I'm doing right now...

    Dish washer pump?

Sounds like a good idea. Do a manifold for doing a whole case at a time. And even a carboy. Rated for hot water and pbw it's perfect. Might need a diverter valve to control it's flow, they have some omph.

    Starter Wort

I'm making a 50/50 wheat brew today. I was thinking of saving some of the tail runnings to can for starter wort. My question is, would that much wheat be ok for a starter, or should I just wait till I have an all barley grist for canning up some more starters?

How do you heat your fermentation chamber? (Poll)

I put a hot plate under a false bottom set on low. it puts out a nice gentle heat and I have no problems with overshooting.

    Gravity Readings

Yes, your app is gonna want corrected values. What I was getting at is, look at your hydrometer and down at the bottom of the scale probably in very tiny print is the temp that it's supposed to read the proper value. You need to check that ie. I have one that states 60F but when checked in...

    Gravity Readings

Right, Palmer states that the SG scale is "Referenced" from 59 F. But you need to look at what temperature your hydrometer is "calibrated" to(Usually printed at the bottom of the scale), and also check it at that temperature to be sure it's right. Although, if your only concern is abv then it...
