    Stir bar getting thrown

Had the same problem. Was talking to someone in my local club, he pointed out its all about how the magnets are oriented. He recommended gluing a washer to the fan, then placing the magnets on the washer. That way you can move the magnets around til it works (genius!). Before I tried the...

    I want to grow hops!

I've done quite a bit of searching to determine the best hop variety to plant. I've found plenty of descriptions that say "All climates" (what does that mean all climates in the hop growth zone 35 deg lat to 55 deg, or all climates on earth?) I haven't found anything that says this plant will do...

    I want to grow hops!

I'd love to hear an update if you have a min. Since its been a few years either you've got hops coming out of your ears or it was a bust. I'm in Houston (just as hot, but more humid), and planning for hops this spring. Also if you have any other hop growing advice I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

What do I need to upgrade to all grain?

Someone recommended to me to try BIAB first. Its super easy and a great way to get started fast. I did my second BIAB 2 weeks ago. If you already have a 10g kettle, all you really need is a paint strainer bag from Home depot/lowes. Also brewing software (I use beersmith) is a really good...

Am I abusing my yeast starters?

Thanks for the info, I'm not 100% that washing yeast makes that much sense for less than 2 generations (by the time you pay for DME). But the whole process is interesting enough for me to try it.

Am I abusing my yeast starters?

I've been looking to do something very similar to reuse yeast. How big do you make your starters? If you're doing a 5 gal batch, do you just use pitch rates for a 10g? Do you wash the 2nd half of the starter, or do you just freeze/refrigerate the whole thing? Any other details you can think...

Keep SWMBO Happy and Brew Beer at the Same Time

I tried this last weekend. It was my first time making bread. I can't believe how easy it was, the directions are awesome! Now the wife (and kids!) get a treat out of brew day...

    Fun for all the family

My boys help here and there (4 1/2 and 3), but they're always hovering around. Recently the 3 year old started wanting beer all the time. So on the last brew day I gave him some wort (hot, flat, nonalcoholic and just hopped), he nearly puked... but on the bright side neither of them ever want to...

    Rehydration with microwave water

I heat a small amount of water using a microwave that I use to re-hydrate yeast. I haven't really had any problems, but after reading this, I won't be doing that anymore: http://usahitman.com/microwave-test/ The article has a bunch of unscientific jibber jabber... but the pics are enough...

"polishing your keg" is more than a clever euphemism

+1! I tried this from Harbor frieght, it works but you'll need 5 of them to get the job done.... not worth it. http://www.harborfreight.com/7-inch-to-8-inch-polishing-bonnet-92100.html

Son of a Fermentation Chiller Hack - advice needed

The pipe is definitely a good idea. I believe computer fans "push" harder than they "suck", so maybe the air from the fridge should be pushed into the pipe. I keep have my keggerator on a 5 minute delay. I would think 3.5 would be enough.

Son of a Fermentation Chiller Hack - advice needed

I'm in Houston too, so I feel you temperature pains... I don't know if a thermostat keeps from cycling the fridge too often. But I know for sure you can adjust that with a STC1000. But yes, if the thermostat cycles the fridge too often it will shorten the life of the fridge. Also, from your...

"polishing your keg" is more than a clever euphemism

Harbor Freight has an angle grinder for $9.99! with a coupon. Its $15 without coupon. If the grinder makes it the whole way through I'll be thrilled. http://www.harborfreight.com/angle-grinder-4-12-69645.html I looked forever at Lowe's site, finally got everything from HF. Here are links...
