What would you do with this water report?

My bad! Thanks Adjelange for your helpful criticism. I considered not responding to the OP, but, wanted to help in case noone else did (my motherly instinct). Next time, I will note details in the original post which should have caught my attention!!! (Iron and Manganese resulting in the need a...

What would you do with this water report?

I plugged your numbers into Palmer's Mash RA Spreadsheet and here's what I found: - With no adjustments, your water is appropriate for SRM 10 - 15. - The Sulfate to chloride ratio is 2.3 which will make your beer "More Bitter". If you plan a lighter colored beer, in the range of SRM 6 - 11...

Some Questions About the All Grain Jump

You might concider partial mash. PM gives you lots of control and can result an excellent beer. You could also make 2 1/2 gallon batches using a mini-masher. I have mashed up to 5 1/2 lb in my mini-masher (I think it is a 3 gallon size). I used to do boils on a glass cooktop for partial...

    First Batch

Get a "brew hauler" and recruit a helper, they work great and save your back! You can learn a lot by watching your beer ferment in a glass or clear plastic carboy.

    Wedding beer stockpile

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I conferred with my HWMO (CO2 extraordinaire) and he suggested that you need to carb it enough to reach equilibrium at 12 PSI. Doesn't matter how you get there. Your can use 40 PSI for a couple of days, then shut off and check after 24 hours. Once it...

    Digital Temp Controller

I have two A419 digital controllers and they work great; I highly recommend them. There are five setup options for the controller, but, the temperature set point (SP) is the first menu option and you could get by with only setting that option. I recommend you review the other setup options as I...

    band aid beer

Naplesbrew, I see you have revived an old thread. I had several early batches with off-flavors. My thoughts about your post: - If you have already tasted it, and didn't die, then you will probably live. - It sounds like you have probably eliminated water as the culprit - as long as the...

You do not need to prime when you are using CO2.

    troubleshooting recipes

You should start off with simple recipes. The recipe you have chosen is not simple and I don't think you will get much feedback. Try looking here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/2009-hbt-bjcp-winners-recipes-141131/ or here: http://wiki.homebrewersassociation.org/BeerRecipes

    Off Flavor

What is your recipe? What yeast are you using? How does the wort taste after your boil? How does your beer taste when you rack to secondary (if you do)? How does your beer taste at bottling time? I haven't seen answers to these questions. These answers may be key to getting advice on what is...

    Recovered yeast #1

Harvested from primary and then pitched the next day. Very clean. This pic shows the yeast after cooled over night, decanted, and ready to swirl and pitch into the next batch.

    Recovered yeast #2

When I pitched this (right after I took this picture), it fermented like crazy. Fermentation appeared to be pretty much done in 48 hours.

    Big belgian yeast strategy

You should not plan to pitch twice. A second pitch is done as a band aid when fermentation gets stuck. Plan to pitch lots of yeast so it can do its job as quickly as possible.

    What's Wrong With My Wife?

Ha, ha, ha! I enjoyed reading all of these crazy explanations of Thad's wife's behavior. Thad, I think your wife is leading a secret life; she likes to brew! She detests laundry, and cleaning is drudgery. Next thing you know, she will join www.homebrewtalk.com and begin an anonymous life with...

Adding flavor after beer is finished

Don't drop anything in your beer. The bitterness will mellow as your beer ages. Wait a couple of weeks and try again. Your final gravity sounds fine. You have lots of bittering going on there. You also have lots of dextrin malts going on there (carapils & crystal). If your beer is still too...

    How many did it take

I believe #13 was my turning point. There were a couple of good batches earlier, but, they were mixed in with bad batches. If we learn from our mistakes, then I deserve an A+ for the mistakes part. Lessons learned have included temperature control, yeast, hopping without calculations, water...
