Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

Kevron, where do I find the exact recipes and steps to make a coopers batch the way you've described? I think your idea is what I'd like to try next. PM sent

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

Kevron... Or anyone else....how do you go about brewing like this? This method might be a nice transition for us between MrBeer and all-out all-grain. Know what I mean? How do I learn how to do what you're doing?

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

Ok, so everyone says MrBeer is just a novelty toy. I've made a few batches and other than the low alcohol content, I like the taste of the beer. Based on helpful advice here, my wife and I are planning to upgrade our hobby to extract or all grain brewing. My question is: what differences...

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

I'm not looking to save money with home brewing. I don't mind spending 8 hours on a brew day. I don't mind spending hours in the forums. I don't mind building a small brewery area in my basement and buying $1000+ worth of materials to do so. But somehow, I worried that I might do all that and...

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

As long as my cost to brew will be similar or less than buying craft beer, then I'm willing to jump in and enjoy it as a hobby. Your comment about brewing being your golf resonates with me. I get that. And I think I could enjoy brewing on that level.

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

Clone fan, I would be happy to drop money into equipment and in the end make my own beer at an equal or lower cost than buying commercial craft beer. Thanks. I'm feeling good about this already.

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

Mtnagel, so your costs were essentially $20 for the bag plus a big lot which you had already at home?

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

I've made some basic MrBeer kits and have been pleased with the flavor of the beer but not the low alcohol content. MrBeer has very recently launched some "advanced" recipes that use more malt extract and have higher end alcohol content. But the cost of those kits is significantly more. I wonder...

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

Kombat, that was an excellent and very helpful explanation. Thank you. I also totally respect the idea brought up above about the enjoyment of the hobby being "worth" something. I agree completely, but for the purposes of this discussion I want to compare straight apples to apples. What's a...

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

    1. what the bare minimum costs are to get into all grain brewing. What are the essential pieces of equipment and their costs? I'm only talking the BARE MINIMUM to make an all grain batch. Do not include costs of ingredients. Obviously, costs can skyrocket from there into professional brewery...

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

Thank you everyone for the comments about MrBeer being low quality. I get that. To each his own, right? My in laws are happy with MrBeer. My wife and I even enjoyed the taste and process of MrBeer for the few batches we've done. Some folks here may despise it because they've developed in the...

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

Interesting point about the cost of the equipment. Our wine equipment was only $150 or so for everything. As with all hobbies, there is a minimum entry cost and then the sky's the limit beyond that. Maybe I'll post that as a separate thread so we can keep this discussion about the cost of...

Cost of all-grain brewing vs MrBeer vs buying beer at the store

Does anyone know the average cost per bottle of home brewing all-grain style vs MrBeer vs just going to the store and buying a quality beer? My wife and I make MrBeer beginner beers which are about on par with store bought beer cost wise but the quality isn't quite there. But we enjoy the...

I need a recommendation for a good beginner guide for all grain brewing

Thanks Nova, I'll check out the link you sent also. We have most of the equipment already but need to figure out those last few specialty pieces that we might need. Thanks!

Brew in a bag sounds great. I'll read the link. Thanks.

I need a recommendation for a good beginner guide for all grain brewing

Nova, Excellent idea. But even your suggestion was confusing because I don't know what you were referring to about specific brewing techniques. We've made MrBeer several times and wine from kits several times. That's all going well but we want to expand into all grain brewing now. But I...

I need a recommendation for a good beginner guide for all grain brewing

My wife and I want to transition from MrBeer brewing to all grain brewing but can't seem to find a way to transition to the next step in a gentle way. Our experience has been sort of like learning to doggie paddle and then trying to read information about Olympic competitive swimming. We catch...

    Mr Beer carbonatation question

Ours should be low also but normally if I have a store bought beer, I can feel it. We drank like a liter of our homemade beer each and it tasted awesome but no buzz whatsoever. I wonder if we didn't finish the primary fermentation and therefore didn't convert the original sugars to alcohol...
