Coopers Irish stout kit+ cocoa powder syrup

'Twas a good beer, top three (out of ten) that I have brewed. Could taste more chocolate-y, it was a little bitter. But it was fun making Black and Tans for the Super Bowl. Next time I'd like it dryer with more abv but all and all it's a decent beer.

Coopers Irish stout kit+ cocoa powder syrup

I've read that stout fg's in the 1.02 range aren't unheard of....union as for the unfermentables, I did use a lot of dme, which might lead to a higher fg than if I had used higher levels of dextrose....in the 5-7 of the brews I've made my temperature range and 'protocol' have been the...

Coopers Irish stout kit+ cocoa powder syrup

Holding steady at 1.022. I will bottle tomorrow if I find the same reading. This will equate to around 4.4% abv which is a little disappointing. On the bright side, I hope it's sweet and malty, which is what I look for in a chocolate stout.

Coopers Irish stout kit+ cocoa powder syrup

Union: yeah I shouldn't have pitched that early. I was worried about potential infection waiting for the must to cool. I'll try specialty roasted malts when I get more experienced, in the past I've failed one too many times with partials lol! Grasshopper: yes , it did bubble up a little thru...

Coopers Irish stout kit+ cocoa powder syrup

I just tried a Coopers Irish stout extract kit 'modified' with 4g of cocoa powder I made into a syrup. My syrup mixture was 1 part nestle 100%cocoa powder 1 part sugar 1 part water pinch of salt, boiled until reduced. I used 4 oz of cocoa powder to make the above mixture. The recipe is as...

    light sparkling cyser/ale

Nice, let me know how the dme works with the cyser, that sounds interesting . I wonder it will make a head of foam?

    light sparkling cyser/ale

This stuff has a pretty gross aroma, kind of like... Sweet skunkyness to it . Haven't been able to drink it on a regular basis. Not 100% failure, but something to build on for next time. next time I'll use fresh juice , without honey for something around 1.040 og. On a side note is pretty...

Belgian Pale Ale partial with mangrove jacks belgian ale

Update: brewed today to an og of around 1.030 using two lbs of Vienna and the extract kit, used dextrose to bring up to 1.040. 30 minute boil of fuggles for flavor. Hoping for an abv of 4%.

Belgian Pale Ale partial with mangrove jacks belgian ale

Thanks for the lightning quick reply ismedeiros88, you are correct about the inconsistency, I tuned the grain mill opening 'wide' for 1 lb. of Vienna and 'narrow' for the other lb. of vienna to get a good mix ( still leaning haha) and I think I'll use a paint straining bag for the grains. thanks...

Belgian Pale Ale partial with mangrove jacks belgian ale

I have ever used a grain masher before, I think I crushed them too fine if that's even possible.

Belgian Pale Ale partial with mangrove jacks belgian ale

Well it turns out my local brew shops don't have what I'm looking for.... Their orders haven't come in for a month or so ( they made excuses but I'll spare you the story) so I was I only able to come up with 2 lbs of gambrinus vienna malt . I'm too impatient to wait for pilsner malt, and their...

Belgian Pale Ale partial with mangrove jacks belgian ale

hello all, i have done some extract kits in the past and some cider making, but I think i am ready to take the next step and make a partial extract. i want a 4-5% easy drinking light summer beer with some freshness added by grains and hops. i will work with 'mangrove jacks belgian ale'...

    light sparkling cyser/ale

I guess that makes sense, I never thought of letting it carb with its own natural sugar . I'll try that out next time thanks for the tip

    light sparkling cyser/ale

It is too bad it won't age after pasteurizing. Oh well! still tastes pretty ok, it was my first cider after all.

    light sparkling cyser/ale

I think you misunderstood me... They are carbonated, but only very lightly. When I said they haven't gained carbonation, I meant since from it was pasteurized. I actually used plastic water bottles to gauge carbonation.
