I posted a similar question on your blog page... I've read and experienced that barrel-aging 5 gal batches goes much quicker than 53 gal barrels. Now that you have the surface area close, do you still plan to age for a year? If so, do you plan to sample along the way?
Anyone know if they still plan to re-release after the issue is corrected? Last I heard, it had bumped out to late September, but now I see they no longer show up on several of the sites. Just hoping to find some more information. Thanks!
Just curious if anyone has any thoughts on aging a beer in one of those bourbon finishing barrels (picture the barrels that have spouts coming out of the head). A local bourbon bar sells them when they are empty and I'm trying to figure out if there's a reason why I couldn't use them to age a...
Thanks. Sometime back, I thought I heard stirring a few minutes prior to starting the vorlauf might help with efficiency. I eliminated the boiling water mash out 20 batches ago or so, but figured keeping the 2nd stir might still be worth it. Maybe that's not the case?
Also, I always start the...
Thanks. The false bottom has a hole in the center and then an elbow held in place with a locknut so it should be sealed. From there, it's a compression fitting and copper tube to the valve.
Looking to see if anyone has any advice. My mash tun is a 10gal Rubbermaid round cooler with a basic perforated false bottom from NB. Over the years I've struggled with getting more grain under my false bottom than I'd like--there is a decent pile underneath when I disassemble during cleanup...
Thanks for the info. I was just curious more than anything-I obviously plan to experiment with mine to figure out the best setting. I'm assuming you meant that you're able to get a good boil at less than a full turn on the regulator? I just wanted to make sure you weren't equating 360° to the...
I just upgraded from a Banjo burner to a Blichmann. I'm curious--I did some searching, but couldn't find any discussions on what people use for a regulator setting. It looks like you get three full turns, so I'm wondering what others typically set it at to get a decent rolling boil (but not too...
I bought the fan but have yet to assemble the stir plate. Just curious-I'm assuming it's normal for this one that with the knob turned all the way down, the fan still spins (at least that's how mine is)? Does that cause any issues with getting the stir bar started or does it cause any issues...
Check out YouTube and just search "grist to grain". It's the version that's just over 45 minutes. I happened to notice the brew sheet when I was watching it too.
Thanks Dan. I'll try making the tea. Either way, can you clarify "not if there is significant amounts?" I took a picture of one level of my oast--based on that, would you say that the amount of mildew/browning is signficiant? Just curious if this is out of the ordinary or if it is more...
So I wasn't able to find a specific answer to this question as I searched the Internet so I'm hoping some experienced growers can help me out. I harvested the majority of my cones yesterday and there definitely are some cones with signs of downy mildew. Any reason why I shouldn't use these cones...
I don't believe that I have spider mites -I've checked for those. Overwatering could be a possibility. I struggle with that because some places you read to use up to a gallon a day and other places I read to wait for the ground to dry out. There's a pretty big difference between the two so I...
Yeah sorry the pictures aren't the best-I was more trying to show the different shades of colors as you look up the plant. Thanks for these suggestions though!
I've noticed that my 2nd year Centennial hop leaves have been slowly yellowing from the ground up for the last 3-4 weeks or so. The pictures below don't show it the best, but I've been cutting off the leaves when they get a very light or pale yellow. I believe my watering is fine, so is this...
Thanks. So what setting have you been able to run the fan on? Using the conventional window screen method, I've always ran it on low so i don't blow the cones around, but I was wondering with the oast if you've found that you can run it faster?
Finally getting around to building this... Just wondering if there is a benefit to having the top/cover on the oast? My thought is that eliminating it should increase airflow and also free up more plywood for more trays. However I want to make sure I'm not missing something by thinking about...
Went down in the basement today to take another sample and found that it was blowing off into my airlock. Obviously warming it up from 60 to 63deg got it rolling again. I skipped the sample for now and put a blow off tube back on. This yeast obviously behaves differently than what I typically...
