First time using Steeped Grains, WAY over on OG

Another thing I haven't seen anyone mention that could be possible is that when you take your sample for the reading, let it sit for a while in the cylinder or whatever vessel you are using. If trub/proteins are suspended in the sample it with certainly affect the density of the solution...

Intertap Stout Spout vs Stout Faucet

Has anyone had issues with their intertap stout adapter leaking where it mates with the faucet? I just used mine for the first time with coffee. Made sure it was attached nice and snug and I am getting a slight leak where it meets the main faucet. Still a great pour but annoying.

    Will Cold Crashing stop Amylase?

Well, what ended up happening? I recently screwed up formulating a recipe and didn't Realize my fg was gonna be 1.020. Didn't realize this until I went to take a reading, which was spot on. Since this was an ipa I wanted it in the 1.012 range. I added 1/4 teaspoon of amylase, the yeast...

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

So something occurred to me, how about moving the harvesting to the beginning of the brew process instead of the cumbersome end? Afterall brewers gotta be planners to some degree. My last brew had an expected og of 1.068, so I bought a vial of wlp002 and was going to do a starter. I...

How to make a yeast starter - Pictorial

I know people were asking about foil vs foam stopper etc... I ended up buying a mason jar from the container store, the type they sell have one piece lids versus the two piece kerr style. I am making my first starter as we speak and I was going to use foil, however I discovered i can...

Expected OG 1.078 actual 1.092 Help?

Thanks for the replies. Looks like this was the problem. I waited, cleaned up everything after the brew day... then swished the fermenter around which had now been sitting for a couple hours and took another reading just a few moments ago. 1.078. the first sample after going back...

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

I guess my problem is that it seemed like the layer sitting on top was extremely thin in the carboy after letting it sit. It seemed difficult to just pour that off, I would say the top was under 1/4" thick. If I want to salvage could I boil some corn sugar and make a mini starter then decant...

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

So, I am pretty sure something went wrong somewhere. When I threw the water in the carboy and shook it around I let it sit for 20 minutes or so. Basically it looked just like the jar in the picture just a bigger version. Is this even useable? Looks like all I have is trub and a tiny layer of...

a REAL Hoptober Clone Recipe -- Need Input

Took a reading at the 5 day point, it was sitting at 1.014 -- expected FG is 1.016 and i think it still has more to go, so my attenuation is doing better than expected as well. I tasted the sample, and I must say I was expecting it to not taste great.... but it was very balanced and...

a REAL Hoptober Clone Recipe -- Need Input

Hey Chris, thanks for looking into it. As I mentioned not concerned with calories but wanted to replicate the beer. Here is what I ended up brewing, and I am expecting a call from a brewer at nbb with some info in a week or so to hopefully put an end to this conundrum. 3lbs pale 12oz...

a REAL Hoptober Clone Recipe -- Need Input

Thanks again for the help -- I appreciate you taking the time. I will more than likely take your advice and just make a recipe with the ingredients that is a bit higher gravity. I am sure it will make a good beer, but it would be nice to figure out how they get such high abv in a low...

Hey Man, thanks for the encouragement. I have been lurking around here for a little while and now that I am a participant I figured I would start posting. Yes this is for a 5 gallon batch. I am a pretty precise guy by nature, I have a few friends that brew and modify recipes and such so I...

a REAL Hoptober Clone Recipe -- Need Input

Hey All -- my first post, and I will be brewing my own beer for the first time this week. For my first brew, I would like to brew Hoptober (New Belgium) as it is a rotating seasonal and not available this year. For those of you who haven't had it, I have only heard praises from anyone I have...
