    Strange krausen

Thanks to all for your input. I don’t think the kveik yeast liked being at the bottom end of the temp range. I cranked up the heat and fermentation picked up speed. Looks like it’s now about finished. We’ll see.

    Strange krausen

After 6 days of fermentation with Lutra yeast, the krausen on this Maibock has a strange appearance. Any thoughts?

Used 3 oz DME in a qt of water, boiled, cooled it and dumped in contents of the pack after it expanded (slightly) for 4 or 5 hours. The smack pack has an...

    Solvent smell

Thanks to all for your input. Fermenter was glass "Big Mouth" and beer tastes and smells fine. I've bottled but left enough behind to toss the floaters. Will open a bottle or two as carbonation proceeds. I've attached an online photo (not mine) showing color of floaters that better approximates...

    Solvent smell

Brewed a Scottish ale (OG 1.069) with S-05. Fermented for 3 weeks at 65-66 deg and finished at FG 1.017. When fermenter opened the solvent smell was overpowering and beer had some small tan spots on the surface (like somebody sprinkled pepper flakes on it). In the bottling bucket, however, no...

    Excess irish moss

What is the effect of excess irish moss in primary fermentation? I accidentally dumped about 3/4 ounce into the boil for a 5 gal. batch!
