    Northern Brewer

This apparently happened a few weeks ago, but ZX Ventures sold their stake in NB to another private equity firm. https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20190711005456/en/Affiliate-Blackstreet-Capital-Holdings-LLC-Acquires-Northern

Can you smell a CO2 leak?

Yep, that burn in your nostrils is CO2. Burns your eyes too. It'll get your attention. I suppose you could "smell" a leak, but the leaks tend to be small. You've got to have your nose (or ear) right on top of it. Much easier to use soapy water or star san and look for bubbles. Less painful too. ;)

Considering going to 2 gallon batches--looking for advice.

That's what I do too. I often build a recipe for 5gal, then scale down to whatever volume I want to make. Can you say "pilot batch"? :mug: As far as the wee yeasties, half a packet of dry is plenty as long as its fresh (and you plan to use the other half fairly soon). Otherwise, chuck the whole...

Considering going to 2 gallon batches--looking for advice.

I started at 5gal extract, then soon ventured into 5gal partial-mash. My all-grain batches have been 2.5gal or less. BIAB is great at these smaller volumes. I've done more 1gal BIAB batches lately. I started with these to try out new recipes, but I'm really liking the shorter brew days (inside...

What I did for beer today

Tweaked the Inkeeper English Pale Ale recipe so I have something to use my miraculous Wyeast 1469 starter on.

What I did for beer today

Repitched a starter on some old liquid yeast. (One small perk of working in a homebrew shop is getting out-of-code yeast for free.) Much to my surprise, the first starter actually fermented down to 1.001. There is life after 6 months. Brewed a wheat malt / Mandarina Bavaria SMaSH. Efficiency...

    What's in your fermenter(s)?

5gal of a Strong Bitter made from an expired extract kit. After swapping out some bad hops and doing a big late addition on the LME, it might turn out OK. Currently at 70F for yeast cleanup. 1.5gal of a Marzen in my first ever attempt at lagering. Mighty close to FG in recipe, so it's also...

    Old kit ingredient usage

I'm making a ESB from a kit that was about 2 months out of code. Turns out the date on the box was the date on the packet of S-04 yeast: the cans of extract still had a few months left. One packet of hops had oxidized, so I replaced with fresher stock. The bittering charge seemed OK, but I added...

What was your Gatewaybeer to craft beer?

It's not really craft, but my first exposure to non-BMC was from my parents around 1990. They went to Europe for their 25th anniversary and started drinking Carlsberg and Elephant when they came back. I started drinking it too when I went to college. In economic terms, I was choosing the...

    PicoBrew? Seriously?

Keurig is a ripoff too compared to using an ordinary drip coffee maker, but there's quite a market for it.:drunk:

    Don't Do That.

Add a late addition of DME to the boil, then walk away. Don't do that.

What I did for beer today

Saturday was do-a-good-turn day for homebrew. I helped my homebrew club with its first public competition as a steward. Having entered a few competitions before, it was cool to see it from the judges perspective. Also helped out a few homebrew customers at the shop with their brewing quandaries.
