    Does thisyeast look okay?

I have had this yeast in the fridge for about two months. It is the washed yeast cake from a pale ale. It still smells good. I'm not sure about those mounds on the cake. I am brewing tomorrow, I plan on using about half of it, there is a lot of yeast there. That is a gallon growler with an...

    My beer is too dark

I am brewing all grain. I like pale ales so that is what I brew most of the time. The last recipe I brewed was 11# pale 1# 60L Mash@154 60min Batch Sparge 60 min boil I was expecting a lighter pale ale but it turned out looking more like an amber. Taste is good. After a boil I do see a...

    My beer is too dark

Every time I brew, my beer turns out darker than expected. I am assuming that maybe I am scorching the wort. It doesn't taste scorched but it always turns out darker than it should. I usually start out with 6.5 to 7 gallons. I boil on my stove. I put the brew pot over two elements and turn...

Low mash temps & low FG

I see, I will batch sparge tomorrow. I have never tried that, I have always fly sparged slowly. Sparging usually takes 1.5 hours. I am assuming that that is why you would mash out when fly sparging, to stop conversion? Thanks for all the help.

Low mash temps & low FG

Low mash temps & low FG

Thanks for the info Denny, so are you saying that mashing in higher than 170 will be okay? I do fly sparge so I might get 10 gallon cooler so I can mash out. I have read that 153 is an ideal temp and I know I'm close so, do you think this is causing my low FG or might it be something else...

Low mash temps & low FG

I have been having trouble keeping a high enough mast temp and I think it is causing my FG to be lower than I would like. I have been mashing in at around 169* and getting a mash temp of about 152* witch isn't bad but over the course of an hour it drops a couple of degrees. I keep the lid on...

    Overflowing Starter

Thanks for the info, I'll have to get some fermcap. I usually make 1200ml starters, I made this one larger because I wanted to harvest some of the yeast before I pitched.

    Overflowing Starter

I made 1800 ml of wort at 1.040 in my 2 liter flask, pitched a vial of WLP001 and placed it on my stir plate. It was covered loosely with sanitized aluminum foil. After about 24 hours I came home to find that it was foaming over and making a mess. I make starters all the time and have never...

    Mash tun cooler conversion/screen question.

I use the same screen in my 5 gallon cooler. I just rolled it up on the end a few times until it fit. It has worked perfectly.

    Discussion: False Bottom Alternatives

I have a mash kettle screen in my MLT and I works great. Easy to clean, never a stuck sparge, cheap and easy.
