How long have you been brewing?

Brewing since Dec '04. Looks like Santa bought lots of people brewing kits for Christmas? :D Batch #4 conditioning at the moment and a trip to the brew shop tomorrow hopefully to pick up ingredients for #5.

    yeast temperature

If you can see a goodly thick layer of foamy sludge at the top of your brew, chances are the yeast's doing its thang. If you have an airlock, it should be bubbling every so often. The bubbling should start about 12-24 hours after pitching the yeast, bubble very frequently for a couple of days...

Cheapest Beer served at a bar?

Here's the deal from Southern England... A pint in a pub will generally set you back from £2.50 - 3.00 (that's about $4.70 - $5.70) depending on where you go in the country. I'm sure that it's cheaper in scotland and northern britain, but us gullible southerners are reduced to paying through...

    Secondary Fermentation

Thanks guys. I will pick up a glass carboy ASAP, but it won't be in time for this particular batch.

    Secondary Fermentation

I've got a batch on the go at the moment and I think its ready for secondary fermentation. I see that all the best brewers (you lot  ) recommend a glass carboy or similar for the secondary. As far as I can work out this is mainly because there's minimal oxygen in there once you've...

Just bottled and tasted my Pale Ale!

Bottled a Pale Ale last night. Very tedious job sterilising all those bottles, and it just seemed rude not to sample the bottle contents as I was going along. :D Tasted pretty good, looking forward to getting it carbonated and cold...

    About to buy a kettle

It looks like the rest of your kit is stainless steel. It would seem to me that a stainless steel valve would be best. If nothing else it cuts right down on any electrolytic activity (which'll probably be minimal anyway) Just my 0.02

What is your favorite commerical beer?

Well, when I go out, I tend to drink Guinness. If you're ever in London, there's a pub just off covent garden called the coach and horses that serves an excellent pint (and does very nice roast beef sarnies at lunchtime as well) At home, I tend to drink cans of Tanglefoot (badger breweries)...

    Primary Fermenting Temps

OK - Thanks. I'll leave the heater belt off then. Cheers PaulH.

    Primary Fermenting Temps

Quick question, got a heating belt for my brew and put it on, and the temp says its currently about 25 (or 77 in funny money) The instructions that came with the kit said to leave it at 21-24. Without the heater belt, I guess its going to be at ambient temperature, which here in the uk at the...

    Homebrew Supply Websites

Home Brew Shop This is my nearest HB store. I haven't used the online facility, but have visited their shop. Its a small shop, but seems to have a comprehensive supply of stuff for beer wine cider and stuff. As a brewing newbie the staff seemed knowlegable and helpful. I might give...

    YABN (Yet another brewing n00b)

Thanks for the welcomes. Janx -- Nice to see the Hitchhiker's guide is alive and well -- seen the film yet? Ken -- not Irish, so I can't help you! My dad lives over in Limavady though. It's lovely part of the world, but haven't really been round Ireland much. Have done the Giant's causeway...

    YABN (Yet another brewing n00b)

Hello all, Was turned to the dark and malty side by my brother over christmas. Brewed a kit of woodforde's wherry and also a great eastern ale (also woodforde's) Now onto my third kit (cooper's IPA) and, having stumbled across this site, learning more about brewing than I really want to...

    Questions on first brew (please!)

KenMc -- I bought some large plastic stackable crates (with lids) and put all my bottles in that once they were filled and conditioning. I figured that if I did get a bottle bomb the crate would contain the mess and glass. Thankfully it wasn't put to the test. The Keg was alright, but I live...

    Questions on first brew (please!)

Nice to hear that you've got your problem sorted out... I got one of those microbrewery kit type things for christmas too. It had some 'woodforde's wherry' (I think) syrup with it. The brew came out pretty well (tasted ok) but was cloudy. I discovered when I took the barrel to bits to clean...
