    Installing (Sealing) Heating Element

Pilot hole with a step bit + lots of oil was the quick, cheap and easy solution for me.

    Graham's English Cider

I am given to understand that after a nice long measured ferment, you can verify that all the sugars are gone, you can control the input of carbonation sugars, and there's no need to pasteurize. For those like me who found this cider to be too dry and sour, getting a sweeter final product...

    Graham's English Cider

Finally kegged mine. Backsweetend with 2 pounds of sugar, as this ended completely fermented out the sugars and was dry and sour. Cold crashed and served. Delicious.

    Water Filter Setup

That's what I do. I used to fill 5 gallon water bottles at the grocery store until I realized that all they do is sell me reverse osmosis'd city water. One of the blue Dupont filters plus a quarter Campden tablet has changed my brewing water game completely.

    Poor man's false bottom

Interested as well. I've been looking at this particular item for a while. I don't know how I'd fit into my kettle, but it seems as though it could work.

    Poor man's false bottom

As far as I am given to understand, 2mm is just right.

Budget HERMS System - Part Two

Excellent post. I keep adding chunks of upgrades onto my 2-vessel system. I'm thinking of finding a way to install my heat exchange coil so that it's removable and I can re-purpose the HLT as a boil kettle.

PSA - Canadian o-rings and fittings.

Hi all - just wanted to put this out there. If you're like me, you want to be able to build your rig but spend less. Searching Amazebay for o-rings and SS fittings is a bit of a search term game. Remember to try both imperial and metric search ID OD and W terms to get the best prices + shipping...

    240v eKeggle BIAB

Right now my recirc pump is on the way (ebay snail mail), so my probe is at the 5.5 gallon line and my element is at the very bottom of the kettle. Last brew (of course) there was a huge difference between the temp of the grains and the temp of the water on the bottom of the kettle. The top...

    Need a heat loss calculator

Excellent. Gonna play with this if I can figure it out.

    Need a heat loss calculator

I'm trying to dial in my system for energy efficiency, time efficiency and hitting my temps, and I'm really interested in calculating my thermal loss so as to further tweak my calculations. I have a thin 16-gallon pot wrapped in a layer of reflectix as well as a layer of the sewn foil cotton...

    Graham's English Cider

A blowoff tube is always the best solution. My Nottingham Ale yeast barely foamed, so as with any yeast, anything can happen.

    Graham's English Cider

Started this last night, and I have yet to see any yeast movement.

Can I assume the brew bag snaps are what keeps the bag from melting to the element?

    Beersty - App for homebrewers

This is a beautiful app. Keep up the good work!

    Poor man's false bottom

Well I found what may be the one for me - a 15.75 Baker's Secret steel pizza pan with 3mm holes from Walmart - $14.89 all in. Sawed the outer rim at intervals and bent them in; added silicone hose to create a seal and protect the pot from scratching. I have some work to do on my pot before I...

    Any problems with scorched wort?

Just get the ULWD element. It spreads the heat emitted over a larger surface. Save yourself the need to worry.

    Graham's English Cider

Does this recipe call for concentrate or fresh squeezed?

    Poor man's false bottom

That's what I was hoping for.

    Poor man's false bottom

This is very true. I want the false bottom to stand off from my electric element by an inch (until I get funds for my HERMS setup). My pots are 15.5" diameter so if I can think up how to find a 2 inch ring to install, then the 12" fb could sit on top of it, no hoses necessary. Problem is...
