    Fermentation temp and questions

Guess I'll just relax. It has to make beer one way or the other, right? Stupid me without A hydrometer.

    Fermentation temp and questions

So the thermometer I had in the bathroom said it was 57 degrees on the floor of the bathtub. We don't use the tile shower. Now I'm worried the yeast went to sleep after sitting in it for 24 hours.

    Fermentation temp and questions

Ok. Thank you everyone. It seems the general reply is that 54 ambient temp is too low for this yeast. Thank you! I will keep it upstairs and RAHAHB

    Fermentation temp and questions

Ok I will leave it in the upstairs bath room. It's the coolest place in the house. Last I checked the water temperature in five gallon back was about 66 degrees. I guess that should work. Guess I just need to relax.

    Fermentation temp and questions

ok so your saying that keeping it in my basement at 57 degrees is a bad idea?

    Fermentation temp and questions

Hi all, second time doing a extract brew myself. I am doing a wheat ale using WLP380. It says to cool wort down to 75, which I did. Then pitch the yeast. I then proceeded to out my fermentor down in my basement. The thermometer down there is saying it is 57 degree F in my basement. I guess...

    First full boil extract brew

So as expected beer turned out. I Am not sure about the flavor seems a little smokey and a hint of something else, not sure what. A few of my buddies liked it so I guess it must be good.

    Man, I love Apfelwein

So I made 2.5 gallons of this necter from the heavens and finally ran out. Did not heed the advice to start a second right away! So the next time I make this tasty beverage I will make 5 gallons. Question is can I use regular sugar instead of dextrose?

    First full boil extract brew

Alright that makes sense, I guess I need to keep an eye on what yeast I use from now on then. Either way where the fermentor is now, the ambient temp is much cooler then the house. I will look into a swam cooler, but how often does the water need changed out?

    First full boil extract brew

I figured as much. That is why I moved it to the basement. It is no colder than 65 in the basement. So add 5 to that I am right where I need to be. Just hope I did it soon enough to avoid ruining anything.

    First full boil extract brew

Awesome thanks all! :tank: The next issue, which is me being over reactive is that the weather got hot here in Central PA. The house has central air, but I am too cheap to turn it on yet.:D Issue is the house is sitting a around 80 degrees. I know it has been about 72 most of the night and day...

    First full boil extract brew

I'm sorry I didn't mean I boiled the grains. I pulled them out right as the water came to a boil. Essentially the boil over happened right after I removed the grains or maybe it happened right before. Either way I may get alot of Tannins? Which is what kind of taste? At least a lot of the...

    First full boil extract brew

Hello, Yesterday I did my first whole boil extract brew. Wow I did not realize how much work went into this! Work, but fun! The weather turned nice and I finally got my hands on a turkey fryer. Cleaned our the turkey fryer, looked over to make sure no rust (it was used 1 time). Did a 6...

    Simple cider recipe

So could you skip the Potassium metabisulfite and Potassium sorbate, back sweeten with some thawed frozen concentrate, and then cold crash too keep from fermenting too much? SO steps would go as... Ferment > back sweeten > sit for a few days to carb > then cold crash to stop the carbonation?

    Partial boil question

I figured the scaling would not be to hard, but would I add the whole addition of the DME/LME and hops while boiling the 2 gallons? I plan on following a recipe my local beer store has. Are there any tools that can do the auto scaling from 5 gallons to 4 gallons and boiling amounts?

    Partial boil question

I have a quick question on partial boiling. What is the disadvantage to doing a partial boil? I do not have the tools/capacity to do a full boil. I think I can get away with a 2 to 2.5 gallon boil without an issue. I will be doing 4 gallon batches as the buckets I have acquired are 5 gallon...

Thinking of trying to make mead

Thanks for all the input. Guess I will do 6 lbs of honey in 2 gallon of water.

Thinking of trying to make mead

Thanks everyone for the responses! So it seems I would need 8 pounds of honey for 2 gallons of water and 2 oranges sliced. Yeast, the yeast nutrition, and patience. Would the Mr beer fermentor be ok for the long haul, the whole 6 months?

Thinking of trying to make mead

I have been very new to the whole "brewing" scene. I have made a few beers an am in the process of making an Apfelwein. I know I am bouncing all over but I am looking for something I will have the most fun doing. I have tried to search for a real basic recipe something that I can use to make...

4 gallon batch with smaller boil

Ok this is all very interesting. Well in my quest here at home in pulling equipment together I have found that my pot will only boil 1.5 gallons safely. Now from what I am being told here this is no way I can do that because I would only end up with .5 gallons left... To the store to pick up a...
